Help with knee pain

Hi,
This ones an old chestnut but would appreciate some of you guys experience/knowledge.
Brief story is I have over the years done a reasonable amount of cycling one particular day whilst undertaking the 3 bridges ride It became apparent I had some knee pain I thought to the outside of the knee, I stayed off the bike a while to rest it up and have cycled since but the pain had not gone away it's there but does not stop me riding entirely.
Fast forward 2 years and after a 20 mile ride on Monday I notice Tuesday that that familiar pain is there again even after a substantial abstinence from riding. It does not affect me in anything else apart from cycling and I can bend and move my knee about quite freely with no pain away from cycling . I have booked a bike fit as stage one to try an eliminate set up issues, I am concerned that even after all this time if not sorted it may hinder me as I want to increase my cycling as we come out of the worst of the winter weather, any help or advice greatly appreciated,
Cheers.
Andy
