First stage (Leeds -> Harrogate) of the TDF

Hi all!
I know a number of people have already ridden the route of the First Stage of the TDF (Leeds -> Harrogate) as part of an organised event – such as Mike doing his charity Power Pelaton and also the Etape de Yorkshire.
However, I wondered if anyone has ridden it on a normal day, no closed roads etc., as a personal ride? I think Rob organised a Club Ride from York a few weeks back, which tackled the key aspects of the route, but I was unable to participate in that.
The reason I ask is that I’m riding it with 25 colleagues from work and I’m slightly concerned that some of the roads on the official route might be a bit busy traffic-wise. Most of the guys cycle fairly regularly, although perhaps not in a group, and we will be splitting into separate, smaller groups when tackling it, over two days, on a Thursday and Friday in early September.
Obviously there's a plethora of routes on Strava and Garmin but if anyone can provide some personal experience, or a good route, then that would be a great help.
Thanks in advance for any information received.
Craig
