Hi, to everyone it’s great to be a member. I am 51 and started cycling 13 months ago, commuting to work to start with (9.7 miles round trip each day) then I really started to enjoy it, so I started cycling every ware around york, and by May last year I had lost a stone, I then bought a road bike and started riding 20 - 40 miles at weekends whenever I could and I found myself getting fitter and faster, and by September I lost a further 7 lbs. So I figured, join the club get to meet you all, learn from you all, and hopefully get to ride with you all:

as I am sick of you lot passing me on Wetherby road (B1224)

( As the saying goes " if you can’t beat em join em " so I’ve joined the club.
Hope to see you all soon
Mark

What a nice introduction Mark. Some of us will read about your weight loss and mileage progress and envy you, because if you do this cycling lark for long enough the weight, speed and mileage just plateaus.
The “you lot passing me on the Wetherby road” will perhaps be the training ride. They’re mainly racers and if that’s the case, they’re the fastest bunch we have. So you’ll find a group that goes at your pace right here:

Welcome!

As Karl says, the Wetherby Road is part of one of the Saturday training ride's four regular routes - and a valuable one since it tends to stay ice-free even through the coldest winter. You're by no means the only club member who came to cycling during what we'll call the prime of life - I got into it at 45 and I was one of that lot on the Wetherby Road. Explore the different groups/rides and enjoy. The nice thing about Clifton is that being a big club (300-odd members) there are people doing all sorts of cycling.

Thanks Phil, It’s nice to know that there may be a group of members in my age bracket at the club, and although I am 51 I often pass people on my rides and my commute to work, so I think I am pretty healthy for my age and cycling seems to be one of the very few sports where you can better yourself whatever your age, and I am going to prove just that to myself this year.

I love all this talk of cycling being something in which you can be competitive into your golden age - makes me think that if I just stick at it for another 20 years I might get good at it
