A combination of Bank Holiday weekend, Tan Hill event and, I’m sure, nasty weather forecast meant there were only 9 cyclists in the Square for the 10am rides on Saturday. Unfortunately, there were no Easy Riders for DaveK’s proposed trip to Malton and so he, Tony and Kevin set off for Millington.

That left Stu, Graham, JohnB, MikeH, Ian and myself to head for Sledmere House. Bit exclusive this cafe as it's only open on Bank Holidays and I can't believe we’ve had a full Summer of cycling since our last visit in May.

Kevin's route took us out through Stockton on the Forrest and then via Sand Hutton, Leavening, Settrington and West Lutton. The cafe stop came at around the 37 mile mark and we had perfect riding conditions all the way out. Having checked the forecast beforehand, Graham and John had done the gentlemanly thing and were riding their winter bikes, Ian had mudguards attached, and so it was with some surprise that we arrived at the cafe completely dry.

For those older members, we had a bit of a “Carry On Up The Khyber” moment at lunch with Mike having a bit of tiffin.

Suitably refreshed, we headed for Duggleby and arrived in North Grimston rather earlier than anticipated - think all that tiffin might have affected Mike’s map-reading ability. So we punished ourselves by tackling Birdsall Bank and Thixendale before heading over to Huggate and descending through Millington Pastures.

Someone mentioned that they were running a bit low on water and so we stopped briefly outside the cafe in Millington, chatting to a lovely bloke from New Zealand who’d done a fair bit of cycling whilst over here on holiday.

Shortly afterwards, water shortages became irrelevant as the heavens opened and we had a very wet ride all the way back to York. I hit a stone and punctured shortly after Gate Helmsley and the rest of the gang assisted with a speedy, if somewhat damp, repair.

My Garmin read 82.5 miles door to door with an average speed of 16.3 mph. Stu emerged almost unopposed with regard to the Points and KOM titles, although Mike may just have scooped Thixendale and a cracking sprint through the surf at Stamford Bridge.

Thanks to all for another fantastic ride and to Kevin for the route.
