The problem as I understand it is that only certain signs are approved by police/highways for use along the roadsides (and only certain sizes of such signage too - only the big ones we plant in the verges are actually approved). Anything else we put out there is potentially problematic - whatever "common sense" considerations may be.
(As I've mentioned to a few people before, the most magical transformation I've ever seen in drivers' behaviour came about at an event where they used "Charity Cycle Event" signage - also, of course, "non-approved". But the message seemed to be that drivers were more tolerant of us on the roads when they thought we were doing it for charity. A sign telling them to beware because racing cyclists are by implication doing something dangerous might - with some drivers - be counter-productive. For example the sort that perform handbrake turns in the road in front of vets race lead cars....
