ive just got myself a single speed with 52x18 gearing.as i live in a lumpy area.im wanting to change the front chain ring to a 42-44. im a bit green to this SS lark. what im wanting to know. is there a front sprocket designed for SS or can you use a normal road gear?

First, as with any chainring, you need to establish the number of bolts and the bolt circle diameter. Google it if you're not sure what I'm on about.

Normal road gears use a 3/32 inch width chain. Some fixed/ss bikes use 1/8 inch instead, which gives greater strength and durability. You can use a normal 3/32" chainring with a 1/8" chain if you've got a spare knocking around, although it would be silly to buy one if you're buying new, but you obviously can't use a 1/8" chainring with a 3/32" chain.

Basically, look at your chain. If it's the same width as your chain on your geared bike, use a normal chainring. If it's wider, buy a 1/8" chainring.
