Knocked off last night...

Post by Sharpy »

On my way home from work last night, no more than 500m from my front door, I got rather heavy hit from a lady driving a car!

I was turning left at some traffic lights (on green) she was turning right, she was allegedly distracted by a pedestrian who had crossed when the crossing was on red and I "came from no where".

Hit by her front wing, suspect the my front wheel went under hers, which stopped my bike rather swiftly sending me over the bars.

So, damage that I know basically my right side is pretty bad, shoulder, elbow, hip, ribs, lumber, knee. Worst being the broken ribs and torn back/lumbar muscles. Pain killers take the edge off but by no means get rid of the pain.

The bike, not sure what damage really, pretty sure the front wheel is going to need more than a bit of nipple tweaking to fix though :o

Got the car wing mirror as a souvenir as well, managed to remove it from the car as i went flying, the car driver did stop and the police and ambo service attended.

Most annoyingly is that I am due to fly to Spain for a week of intensive training next weekend, not sure that will happen now

Will sling some pics up of me and the bike when I get chance.

Be safe out there, even in the daylight (with lights on) we are invisible to other road users....

Ouch! Hope the injuries heal up smoothly. Perhaps her insurer can pay for your rescheduled training camp?
"Came from nowhere" = "Clearly, I wasn't looking carefully enough".

Ouch! Since she was turning right, your priority means that her insurers hopefully won't put up too much of a fight. Good luck with that :?

Heal fast.

Thanks all, hoping that the insurance sorts it all out for me nice and easily. Either way I cannot see how I have done anything wrong, she seems to have just run into me.

Last time I broke ribs it was not a quick healing process, so preparing myself for missing the start of the season. If I get back quicker then its a bonus.

Cheers

Sorry to hear about your accident Sharpy. Can certainly sympathize having had a nasty accident a few years back. Hope your insurance sorts it out quicker than mine. Nearly 3 years on it still isn't settled. Have only only had a couple of interim payments. It hasn't helped that i am still undergoing treatment for my injuries though. I was insured through the CTC and their solicitors are dealing with it. I hope your experience is better than mine as the car drivers insurers in my case anyway are certainly not lying down.

Hope your on the mend, here some tips if it happens to anyone else.

Incident Checklist - If possible, you should have made a record of the time and place of the incident and details of any other vehicle(s)/property or person(s) involved. You should not have any discussion with the other party with regard to liability. You may, however, provide details of British Cycling's insurance department:

Always make sure you obtain:

• Third Party driver contact details, including registration number and insurance details.
• Contact details for all witnesses.
• Witness accounts.
• Details of the incident location to include photos of the incident location or highway defect.

We recommend that all incidents are reported to the police immediately. Insurance particulars should be obtained from the motorist at the very earliest opportunity. If a motorist fails to provide this information or you have any concerns that the information given to you is incorrect or incomplete, you should also report this to the police immediately.

Thanks, although I do not have many of the details as I was feeling a tad worse for wear, and being treated/carted off to ambulance.

I am making some progress (given the fact I am having to take time off work) and have found she has not reported it to her insurers. But at least I know who they are now.

Similar to the British Cycling side BTF have picked this up and their solicitors have been in touch and are taking on the case. I sense a battle though! We will have to wait and see.

Cheers
