Looking for Cobbles

Post by Nick Waggett »

Hi all

Last weekend I did a ride called the Ronde van Oost Lancashire which is organised by a friend of a friend to coincide with the Ronde van Vlanderen and is basically a hilly 50 mile ride than goes over as many cobbled sections as he could find around Colne, Hebden Bridge, Heptonstall etc. (YES, I know some of this is West Yorkshire!) More info here: http://crossjunkie.blogspot.com/

I then saw the warning note in this week's Update about "3 miles of cobbled section after right turn from Stape is in a very poor condition" and wondered whether it might be possible to put together a similar route in East/North Yorks.

So the question is: does anyone know any more cobbled/paved road sections in this area?

Thanks, Nick.

You really need to head to the mill towns to find cobbles. Calderdale is a Mecca. http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/29462644

Otherwise you are stuck with hunting out rideable bridleways: Skipwith Common, East Cottingwith Hag Lane, Sand Hutton Common etc

I'm always up for some rideable bridleways. Good 'cross training. I'm doing Scotton 100 on Sunday of course!

Those of a certain age may remember a cobbled climb near Halifax used in the Kelloggs Tour of Britain in 88 when the TOB was a proper race when all the top continental pros rode it :

The picture shows one of the 80's more photogenic UK pros - Joey McLoughlin on Shibden Wall. We had a clubrun out there that year in search of it. We didnt find it but found plenty of others. It didnt scar me at all!
