Weekend Roundup

Post by Rob »

Just 4 Cliftonites in the Square this morning for the clubrun. Good day for riding though, fairly stiff headwind all morning eased in the afternoon. Replaced by some rain, but never enough to actually get you wet. Nice quiet lanes nearly all day.

Cooky needed to be home early and left us at Sicklinghall. Muzzy wanted a non-stopper and pushed on at Beckwithshaw. Left just self and Andy to cross Bland Hill and visit Darley Mill cafe. Has been rebranded as a "restaurant" where you have to "wait to be seated", but served its purpose.

Back via "Cut Throat Lane" and Aldwark Bridge. Lots of water travelling in the direction of York! Back just before 3 with 70 odd miles on the clock. Average speed not overly sparkling, but rather heavy legged by the end.

A ride in the Wolds next week. Again nothing too epic. Come and join us.

Turned up at the square saturday at 10 for a nice easy K ride but was told by Kevin I had to ride with the assos group.
Steady ride out to Millington, good company, toasted teacake and 100 winter miles in the legs, what more do you want?

I also rode with the Assos group, it was a top day out, quite hard work for me but Cyan Skymoos saved me a couple of times so thanks loads for that (my hero!) :D The wind was unforgiving and the cafe stop was most excellent.

Great weekend of cycling apart from the horrendous winds.
Thought I would have a warm up on Friday and I headed north towards Slane and did my 40 mile training loop in 2hrs 12. That set me up nicely for Saturday as I had been given an invitation from the Bray Wheelers CC- Shay Elliott was one of their members (1st Irishman to wear the Maillot Jaune in 63). Got to the meeting point 3km south of Bray and very close to the mountains, I already knew what the day was going to bring, hills, hills and more hills
2 groups formed, one the race team from the club so I opted to stay out of that one as it was full of racing snakes and joined the 12 others that were going in group 2 - the supposedly slower group. Pace was quick from the start, with the racing snakes disappearing from view quite quickly. The hills came just as quick, we took in some fabulous climbs as we headed south towards Laragh and beyond. Ended up at a lovely coffee shop overlooking one of the many big lakes in the mountains and any thoughts of a good rest were put into touch when the group leader, Ger, said "quick drink and we're off", 20 minutes later it was back on the bike to finish the ride. All in all 85 of the hardest miles I've done in a while and honorary membership of the Bray Wheelers CC with it :D

You'll be needing to change your Moniker if/when you return to ride with us again ;)

As Rob details above, went on the Sunday run which I really enjoyed.

After leaving the other 3 I had a fastish ride back home via Wetherby, Cattal, Aldwark, Sutton, Sheriff Hutton. 62 miles on a great day.

Taking note of Cyan Skymoos's recent inference that it's the hours riding rather than the speed or distance that counts I spent three and a half of them (30% increase on previous longest ride in last three months) with aching knees and crying eyes on the Circuite de la "Sarf" taking in Naburn, Cawood, Selby and Escrick. The hills between Naburn and Cawood had me in some difficulty but a heady tailwind saw me briskly home with a distance of .. oh sorry forgot - its not how far you go it's how long you keep at it.

Reliabilty ride looks an increasingly imminent and daunting prospect.

Yes Mal.. I should just point out the 100 mile was a guesstimate based on one of the many Garmin's on the ride, and knowing how far it is from Sherburn to York.

Once Kevin had despatched as many riders as he could into the Assos group  we were left with several K Group regulars: Finley, Jenny, Pete, Mike, Trevor, K & self plus joined by BC Andy J and 4 of his Go Ride teenagers.

We were all soon to discover that these youngsters knew what they were doing, were rather sprightly AND had NO slipstream whatsoever! We tried our best to set them a gluttonous example & fatten them up in the cafe - but to no avail......

An excellent route chosen by Kevin and amended on the road to fit time, conditions and riders. We pedalled out via Crayke, Oulston, Coxwold, Byland, Kirkham and back to Coxwold to partake of their large warm cafe.

We discovered in the cafe and felt very privileged too, that Pete chose to spend his birthday out with us for the day! (good excuse, as if we need one, for another cake!). Hope you enjoyed your family celebrations for the rest of the w/e Pete.

Quick climb out from the cafe and then a fairly direct route back via Easingwold. 60miles on the clock by home, longest ride ever for some there and some good digging in after Xmas excesses.

Thanks
Claire
