Weekend Roundup

Post by Rob »

Pleasant Sunday Clubrun today. 5 in The Square. Bernard had his own route ideas after Spofforth, which left Roo, Nigel, Muzzy and self to tackle the classic Pannal, Bland Hill, Fewston, Otley, Kirkby Overblow, Wighill loop. We used to do this route very regularly, but not so recently. Nice to be out there again. Great riding conditions and varied terrain. Back in York after about 80 miles at 3pm. Roo claimed to have "not done much recently", but rode well!

Next week we thought we'd head for Hutton-le-Hole, with the longer alternative of Castleton for those preparing for Tan Hill. Think I'll be dastardly and use a variable gear mechanism for that one.

Following week will be Darley Mill with a longer option of Bolton Abbey.

General announcement: Take That & The Saturdays are officially sacked from all future marketing campaigns for the Intermediate ride. Last week Kylie pulled in 9 revellers; this week there were 2, Tony G and myself! We had a couple away due to illness and holidays but we lost all of our fringe players. Clearly, Take That was a turn off! :(

Many highlights though:
- It was a superb 86 miler d2d on a sunny day out through Markington, Fountains Abbey and Kirkby Malzeard with some outstanding views (when I could draw breath to focus ;) ) on the back lanes into Masham. We stayed clear of the bridge, thanks Muzzy. After lunch, we attacked the interminable climb up to Warthermaske like men possessed, before flying down into Grewelthorpe and sprinting all the way back to Ripon and home.

- Any Saturday regular will tell you that Tony G has an engine the size of a Kenworth Truck! By slogging at a brisk pace into the headwind all the way out to Masham alongside Tony and then returning at pace on the climbs and subsequent sprint into Ripon, I found myself suitably ‘stretched’. In the words of Forest Gump, “he kicked my but-tox”. By the time we had paced ourselves to Boroughbridge, I found myself runnin’ on fumes and had to wind back Tony the Tank Engine from ‘full steam ahead’ mode to ‘chat’ mode. I’ve really had the OAP stagger goin’ on today ;) The challenge was fantastic for my overall fitness though and, like a true Clifton masochist, I’m now strangely motivated to get to TG’s level. Many thanks to Tony for a great day out!

:)

Cheers rob. It wasn't a claim, twas the truth, was my first ride over fifty, and with the club, in nearly 3 months. A pleasure to be out with such class! Feels like the legs are working again.

After an unscheduled week off due to man flu I rejoined the K-Ride and enjoyed the company of 8 riders heading out as advertised to Malton.

This week I learned to never take my eyes off the lead rider as I found myself all alone at the bottom of the climb out of Kirkby Underdale. Undeterred - I struggled to the top of Uncleby Wold where by pure chance I managed to rejoin the group coming towards me. The wiser majority had elected to take the longer but slightly less severe route to the top - I should have known better! Back in the shelter of the pack we were soon full steam ahead again looking forward to tea and cake in Malton.

Home via Kirkham, Sand Hutton & Murton then south west of York had me home as the sun was setting. The extra layers and lights I had taken as a precaution were put to good use.

Many thanks to Kevin et al for another excellent day - dark and cold by the end but it was still very good to be back on the bike.

Regards to all

Pete

Darren,

Apologies for leaving you on your lonesome with Tony "The Tank Engine" Grant, after deciding that I would do 2 rides over the weekend I opted for the 3 hr training ride and have to say that I enjoyed ever minute of it, even if the group was a little bit big - according to others. Will probably do more training rides now over the winter months and mix it up with an odd long ride

Monthly Club Run for the MTBers on Sunday to the Dales. A challenging route taking in Nidderdale and Coverdale for a medium sized bunch of 9 riders. Despite several threatening clouds we had the pleasure of some fabulous vistas looking down across the Dales bathed in patches of sunlight highlighting the bronzes of autumn heather and trees. Lunch at a Pub in Carlton where we tucked into full Roast Dinners for the price of a rocket and cress sandwich in York. The cars arrived back in view just as the light faded so perfectly timed despite and hour's search for Simon (Hillary) Weston en-route.

Meanwhile another bunch of riders were having a bash at 'something different' in the form of the Whinlatter Duathlon in the Lakes. A Run/Bike/Run with 130 odd other competitors around the Forest in half decent weather made a change from the usual Trail Centre experience special mention to Paul Scott for another strong performance coming 43rd and Jeff, not usually known for his speed on 2 legs, only 8 mins behind in 68th. Mandy suffered a puncture on the bike section and, having the wrong spare tube, ended up running a large part of that too so a big effort from her.

Full results at http://www.sportident.co.uk/results/201 ... rDuathlon/ but Clifton highlights are:

Paul Scott 43rd (2:12:03)
Jeff Barber 68th (2:20:14)
Wayne Elliott 74th (2:21:44)
Mandy Faint 95th (2:31:13)
Deborah Goodall 121st (2:57:48 )

Im sorry too for having to miss the ride on Saturday Darren, To be honest I was gutted fullstop that I did not feel upto going out at all on the the bike let alone a potential 100 miler because it looked like a nice day weatherwise for cycling. Have not ridden since the previous Saturday due to illness but am starting to feel better thankfully. But it certainly was not the prospect of The Saturadys appearing that put me off

Thank God for that. Could we get Eric Clapton instead - understand he was a bit of a cyclist in his youth and he certainly made them disraeli gears famous.

I opted for a quiet ride round the flatlands of Appleton Roebuck, Taddie, Selby and Bubwith in search of some steady miles, peace and tranquility. However I ended up being mobbed, in fact mugged wouldn't be putting it too strongly, by that gang of ruffians the training group - completely disturbed my quiet contemplations they did.

Here are a few photo's from the Winlatter Duathalon. I rather enjoyed the event. As it was my first and I was nervous I started out at the back. I took the initial climb along firetrail really slowly. To my surprise I started passing people. Then it got really steep and I continued running whilst the people I was passing were walking. I became a bit more competitive after that. I am still sore though!

sunday ride

Post by bernard turgoose »

After a good run out with Rob's grp too beyond Cowthorpe I decided that my wrist problem wouldn't stand a lot of out of the saddle riding, so planned a flat route taking in the new cycle path from Wetherby to Aberford & then via Lotherton,Sherburn in Elmet< South Milford, Hillam, Gateforth, Chapel Haddesley, Temple Hirst & then to the Too Hoots garden centre cafe - where the welcome was warm as normal, even though they ahd been decended upon by 2 large groups before my arrival - they passed me 2 to3 miles away from the cafe - so my timing was good.
I then decided to try out the Transpennine route back to selby via Burn airfield, before hitting the A19 for the last couple of miles into selby & then home via Wistow, cawood & Naburn with 72 miles on board & 48.7 to the cafe stop.

PeteT, we were all very pleased to have you back in the group after the hill split on the K ride.
Kevin correctely predicted that you took the other route which was the only time the group of 8 split.
It was a particularly enjoyable day with the lovely weather and countryside and the 8 riding well together. A social ride it certainly was with ages from 15 to x nattering away on the flat and struggling together on the climbs.
Perfect timing arriving home just before lights needed.
Thanks Keven, Peter and all the others
