Quiet route to Whitby?

Anyone know of a nice route to Whitby that doesn't extend the direct route too much? I've ridden there a couple of times and tried both the Moors road and the A171 neither of which are much fun. Does anyone know a better way?

Have you tried riding through Stape and on to Egton Bridge? Its very lumpy and desolate, bleak in the Winter. A fantastic bit of moorland.

Thanks. That's the sort of thing I was looking for. I've ridden bits of that from Whitby out to Goathland but didn't know you could get all the way down to Pickering. Should make the trip a lot more enjoyable.

Howard took a bunch of us to Whitby and back last September - noone posted a Garmin file of the the route, but DaveC described it: "Castle Howard, Appleton, Rosedale, Egton Bridge, Whitby..., Grosmont, Stape, Pickering, Riseborough, Malton, and back to York via Kirkham Abbey".
It was a fantastic route, about 130miles all told, riding above Rosedale on the way out. I'd guess Howard still has the .tcx...
cheers,
tom

Blimey, two choices in one file. All I need is a Garmin now.
