Third Party Insurance

Might be an idea to get a thread together on this

Pretty important and seem to be a few pitfalls or at least a few grey areas in my knowledge

I have always relied on CTC membership but have just taken a look at the new Ride and Race from BC

Looks interesting but raise a few questions about "competitive" and "non competitive" cover

Seems clear from BC site that Ride is intended to cover sportifs / commuting / recreational riding

And Race is intended for those who would normally take out what we might have called a "racing licence"

Anyone know where that leaves people taking part in say our club event Spocos or open TTs? I am assuming CTT (RTTC as was) would cover the organizer but what about individual riders?

From the way BC are distinguishing between Race and Ride i am not sure the 3rd party cover which comes with CTC membership covers?

And my reading is that BC Ride would not as well

Our club affiliates to the CTT (RTTC) and they cover the club, officials, volunteers and others involved in promoting an event. Riders also get a basic 3rd party insurance if they don't have their own. So if you're a BC member and have an accident during a TT, then your BC insurance will be used.

That's why you have to be a member of a CTT affiliated club to ride one of their events - open or club spoco.

My take on it is that if you are riding any TT's and you're bothered about insurance/legal advice etc then you should have either BC silver/gold (race) or CTC membership. I'm pretty certain the CTC cover you for riding CTT time trials as well.

For road racing you either use your BC membership insurance or that of whatever promoting organisation it is - like LVRC or TLI.

And that's as much as I know!
