Former Clifton rider in accident

Post by cath »

Former Clifton CC rider Damien Smith, son of current member Tony Smith, has been involved in a serious accident while competing in the Easter 4 Day Stage Race in the North East last weekend.

It is believed Damien was descending a hill when a rider crashed in front of him, in attempting to take evasive action, he lost control and suffered serious head and leg injuries. He is currently in Newcastle General Hospital and is described as critical but stable.

Our thoughts are with Tony, Damien and their families and we wish him a speedy recovery.

I'd heard that someone was badly hurt - it never occurred to me that it was somone with local connections. Best wishes to Damien and to Tony & family - hope he is soon on the mend.

Sheesh that's bad. Best of luck and make a good recovery. Head injuries can take a long time but you can get there!

A message today from Tony Smith - Damien has been moved out of intensive care at Newcastle General.

He suffered a fractured skull, broken leg and ribs in the crash but he is now conscious and aware, and though still pretty confused - he is now on the road to recovery.

There is a Facebook page that you can link to from his team website if anyone wants to leave a message.

Thats good to hear. I was just talking to Tony in Cycle Heaven the other week about Damien's racing and achievements, it was obvious how proud he was of his son.
Best wishes and hope the road to recovery is a short one.

An update from Tony - Damien is now fully conscious and sitting up, there is no sign of brain damage at all so he's well on the road to recovery.

Good news!
