Your committee (nearly all of them!!!) met last night with Graham Titchener, the project manager of the Council's £8M project over 3 years to develop cycling in York as mainstream transport and leisure option for young and old. So that includes us!
This is not going to be a full report of what we talked about, others will do that. But one issue I'd like to float right away:

He is very keen to factor in cycle sport, and would like to see CliftonCC maintain a hight profile in development of plans and in decision making. There was enthusiasm about the notion of in town racing even!

We are therefore invited to join the Cycling City 'Marketing and Communication' group, who spearhead events and what were called 'soft' programmes.

Meetings are at around 4-6 weekly intervals. Anyone interested to take this on for a stretch? If you are call me on mob 0797 486 7301 and we can talk some more.

Assuming someone else takes on Membership Secretary for the upcoming year (job description going in the Sits Vac column in Cliftonite, form an orderly queue please) then I'd be happy to take this on. I'll be organising the road race next year and am keen to run a vets race too, so it would make sense for me to liaise with the council over how they could promote these and other events. The appearances at the Festival of Cycling and the ToB finish were fun, so I'm up for doing this sort of stuff again - though it would be great to have others on board and/or taking a lead on them. Persuading people of the joys of cycling is fun!

Oh, Since last night I seem to have a hot line to the council's works department, so please mail me (accurate) comments on physical road deficiencies for cycling, and all sorts of constructive ideas on how and where to make cycling safer, more convenient and attractive to people in York. People like your boss, grandparents and children for a start.

Makes you wonder if we should concentrate on our existing members, get some new blood into official positions that will shortly need filling and encourage the 200+ members we already have to reach their full potential?

My suggestions to improve cycling in the York area. I live on Strensall Road so I know this area better than other areas.

1 Construct a off road cycle path from Strensall to the outer ring road.
2 Create a better crossing of the ring road, underpass as Haxby road,
3 Same for other roads into York from out lying villages. (Haxby appears to be ok)
4 Lower vehicle speed limits and promote more driver awareness.
5 Remove the chicanes on Huntington road, which are a danger to cyclists and vehicles, and also creating jams when busy, no effect when not, noise and air polution.


Inside of the ring road I think that it is basically ok but I am sure other people will have there own local ideas/suggestions.

As per my entry on the other thread - I'd like to see a safe river crossing at the northern end of town to match Millenium bridge - Scarborough bridge needs to be modified (I know it is being refurbed as we speak but I'm not sure that it will be all that much more accessible afterwards).
