Epic ride!
I know that phrase gets thrown around with wild abandon these days but for me today was one of the best days I've spent on the bike for a while.
Perfect weather, a fantastic route (thanks Kevin) taking in some of the most spectacular scenery North Yorkshire has to offer, some beautiful sweeping twisting roads, along with some fairly vertical ones too.
Plus we got home before it got completely dark (just).
Thanks to all for a thoroughly enjoyable day.

Bother - I just knew it was going to be an excellent day out and a challenging but fun route...

Just as well I took the 'family compatibility option' or I'd have been in deep doo-doo!
Kevin handed me the Intermediate Ride Map in the absence of most of the usual intermediate ride regulars - most of whom I guess did the Arther Metcalfe? 13 riders left the Sq - 3 or 4 from the Uni cycling club I believe - and headed out to Settrington Bank via Leavening, then across the wolds to Driff where lunch was taken in the Market tea-rooms.
Leaving Driffield a few navigational difficulties in the town streets resulted in a couple of wrong turns hence we exited town via the main Beverly road. The route then involved a rather fractal Kevinesque path through the lanes before leading onto the drag via Tibthorpe to Huggate. The fit younger members of the group were by now outpacing the rest and so broke off the front - the remainder proceded at a more sedate pace down to Millington where a democratic process saw an unscheduled 2nd cafe stop and a pleasant drink in the sun was enjoyed before we came back to town the usual way.
80 miles at a reasonable 16mph average in glorious sunshine made for a good day out - and I wasn't late home!

I found myself with that group and after awhile, when we were debating which way to go at a junction, wondered aloud if we were going to let you catch up. "Nah, they'll be miles back" came the reply. As it dawned on me that I'd be riding the rest of the route at these guys' speed, I started to feel a twinge of apprehension.
When I broke off left for home, my speedo read 123km and a moving average of 28.0 kph. I took the final 6k home at a nice relaxing 20k or so 'recovery pace'.
Good ride and excellent weather, thanks everyone.
