Took part in the Ryedale Rumble on Sunday. Opted for route 2 as I didint fancy a repeat of my Etape du Tour cramping episode with it been a fairly hot day, a bit of a wimp I know

. Having never done Boltby bank i found this very tough. but was glad of the advice posted by Kevin about the descent which I found more difficult, I know that sounds even more wimpish. But I survived to get a Silver and was pleased I wasnt walking at the top of Blakey where the photograher was. It was a superbly organsed event with well stocked feedstops will probably do it next year.
Should be doing the Tanhill ride on the 23rd so see you then

Having wimped out of the Sunday club run due to me not feeling 100% and not wanting a repeat of how I was on the yorkshire alps ride I decided to go home acaster, tadcaster, sherburn way. 60 fastish miles with some rolling terrain in it, I got bored sitting at home outside so went and did another 15miles to past the time.

I had an interesting day ‘riding’ Rydale 2 which included a tyre bursting, a separate flat and toppling over on a steep hill. I post to thank Tim, Mark and Bernard for helping me change tyres, mend punctures and explaining the correct procedure for gear changes on big gradients. In helping me they sacrificed their own times and I am very grateful. As I am unlikely to be able to repay them by riding for them in the future (they are too fast) as a gesture to the club I am happy to organise 3 SPOCO TT events instead of my usual 2 next year. Thanks again for a great display of club riding I am very grateful.

I too took part in the Rumble, opting for route 1.
Caper Hill was the nasty surprise of the day for me. I'd looked at it beforehand on the OS 1:50000 (yes I do actually have some paper maps Rob!) and it didn't seem too bad, warranting only a sole gradient chevron. "Might be able to big ring that" I thought to myself. Hmmm, it was in fact an absolute swine and had me shouting a la Kevin but with profanities jumbled in there (unlike Kevin). So apologies to anyone within earshot as I ground upwards very definitely in bottom gear.
Rosedale Chimney Bank was too much for me at 90ish miles and I "chose" to dismount shortly after the second hairpin undertaking most of the following ramp on foot, at a sliding cleat trot! It was only the thought that there might be an event photographer further up that motivated me to remount!
One of my personal cycling goals is to elegantly climb RCB on standardish road gearing; although I have successfully climbed it several times it's never been anything other than "messy"! More work required!
Great to see a good number of Cliftonites before, during and after the ride. A memorable day. Oh and congratulations to ChrisT, IanH and DaveC on achieving Gold times on this brute of a course.

I tackled the Ryedale Rumble route 2 ride and thoroughly enjoyed it! This is the first Sportive I have entered and was very impressed by the event organisation, food stops and en route directions. As I couldn’t get out of bed on Sunday morning it was pushing 9:20am when I finally set off. I caught the Bernard group said hello and pressed on to the first food stop where I met Ginnie who was tackling the route 1 ride (congratulations on finishing, I wouldn’t like the thought of still another 70 miles to go at the top of Blakey!)
I struggled up Blakey having to stop a couple of times to “catch my breath” but managed to inch up the last hundred yards for the photographer at the top! A good downhill into H-L-H and another sandwich.
The last section to the finish was fairly easy with just the final climb back to the school as a sting in the tail. I finish in just over 4:57 missing out on gold by 2 minutes! Wish I never stopped so long at the feed stations now!
A very enjoyable day and was different to cycle that far on my own so felt like I really had cycled the 70ish miles!

Another RR route 1 veteran here - boy was that hard. The hills were just relentless and there were very few sections where you could get down in to a rhythm. It was good to ride with Dave and Ian for a while on the way to Rosedale Chimney (where we all enjoyed a nice walk in the sun - I've set myself the same aim as Howard for getting up that little beast!).
I was looking forward to the roll down to H-L-H, but had a bit of a light-headed moment and had to stop to get my breath back. A bit of a rest at H-L-H saw me right and I was feeling good on the final leg, until that little grovel back up the school drive - that was just cruel.
Good to see lots of Clifton shirts at the finish, sorry I wasn't very communicative - I was pretty wrung-out by that point.
A special apology to Bernard - he seems to have come under the misconception that I'm a "Steve" when I'm in-fact a "Jason"! I should have corrected you after the ride on Sunday Bernard, but to be honest I could barely remember my name myself at that point

.
Well done all.
Jason.

I did the RR route1 and set off with Timj, IanH, Dr Dave and Shaun. We ran as a team most of the time and I really enjoyed it, better than last year when I was on my own most of the time.
Unfortunately the route had to miss the Cocayne loop due to landslides so we got the pleasure! of ascending Caper hill which is as tough as the other big climbs on the route.
By this point we had split up a bit but on the way down to Stape and Cropton rode with Jason and IanH which helped a lot as it was, as last year my worst spell. After HLH I got energy back and had a good run to the finish.
Well done to everyone from Clifton.

There are some good photo's from Ryedale Rumble on the following website. The look of pain at the top of Blakey Bank doesn't seem to be showing too much on my face!

Hi will done to everybody who managed to achieve their personal goals on Sunday, I know that Andy & I did, & Andy you don't have to commit to any extra Spoco organising- what we did was only what we would normally do on a club run, but thanks for the thought. When do you want to sort out the front wheel ?
Jason I thought you was Steve Roebuck as you came into the finish, the other guys did correct me at the time & has soon as you took off your helmet & was cooling down I knew I had got it wrong.
Best wishes
Bernard

Another RR route 1 for me. As Dave C has said we started off together and was OK on Boltby and Blakey banks but my lack of recent miles caught up with me on Caper Hill and I 'cleated' my way up whilst the others slowly cycled out of view, then Howard cranked past leaving me feeling rather inadequate
Once I remounted at the top things picked up and I had a solitary run to Rosedale - here I didn't even bother trying it but dismounted at the bottom of 'the steep bit' and again cleated until the gentler gradient which I then was able to manage with a degree of style.
The '5kms to go sign' came round earlier than I expected and I looked forward to the end but then missed the turning and ended up taking the wrong road. After convincing myself that I hadn't gone wrong for what seemed like hours but could only have been a couple of mins I retraced my steps and found the drive back up to the college where the H group regulars were all sitting exchanging stories of the days events.
3 days later I can reflect better on what seemed at the time a really tough event. Hopefully next year - knowing what to expect - I'll be faster and better able to appreciate the scenery. Anyway they'll be no Caper Hill to worry about......

Andy - don't be daft! (':)')
It was a pleasure to ride round with everyone and the "all for one and one for all" spirit is something that I have really enjoyed about joining The Clifton.
The Ryedale Rumble was my first sportive and I am afraid I have caught the bug!! It was great. I was pretty slow, but I made it over all the climbs bar the middle 20m of Boltby Bank (did more of it than I have before - fourth time lucky hopefully!).
As soon as I got back I started looking for upcoming events to enter, any suggestions?
Thanks to all.('')

Ullapool one looks good - if you can get there for 8am on the Saturday!
