As one of the few not out on CTC-related activities, I'll kick this off...

I was down at Harworth again for The Big One in the old blokes' racing calendar - the Tom Simpson Memorial RR on Sunday. This precedes an Under-23's race and the whole day is a big event - they got Team Katusha's Ben Swift doing the prize presentations. I was sole Cliftonite there although local lads Simon Wright and Colin Sinclair were out in the 40-49's race.

It was warm, sunny and with just a hint of breeze in our faces on the start/finish straight as the 50-59's rolled out for 53 miles or so. I clonked through the gears and up to tempo and found myself 100yds off the front; I rolled along for the first half-lap in case someone fancied joining me in an early breakaway but the answer was sadly "no" as the bunch reeled me in. A break of three went, but all bar one were gradually pulled back so I just stayed up near the front and watched out for dramas. To my great delight this was the second race of the season which didn't dissolve into cramps so I was still up front after the final corner onto the uphill drag to the finish. Sadly I chose to follow the wheels of a couple who led things out early but conked out halfway up the hill; I got boxed in and by the time I'd got out onto the wide open spaces of the wrong side of the road, I was sprinting for tenth. Still, good fun and my best stab yet at this event.

On Saturday night had my first session on the track at Manchester in a few months. I tagged along with a 'Red Kite' evening, where we had the track to ourselves and three hours of coaching. Skills included riding in a pace line as a single and double, and taking a lap where the leader of the pack sprints off the front until they reach the back of the line again. Everyone stayed safe, even though a couple of riders pulled their foot out of the pedal, which was more scary for the people following.
A great night all in all, and thanks to Shaun for organising and for the lift.
