It’s probably fair to say we were unlucky with the weather. They had not a drop of rain in York! We noticed on leaving Millington that the ground, 5 minutes earlier flowing water, was dry. We got pretty wet! This didn’t quell our enjoyment – or our sense of achievement at 70 miles (including Settrington Bank!)

6 of us set forth, out through Stockton on the Forest, through to Leavening, Settrington and Sledmere for lunch. Lunch is always a high point for me and this was no exception – although 6 of us squeezing onto a tiny table with pots of tea, hot water, milk, sandwiches, soup etc was probably excessive – despite the potential gains in group bonding! Kevin discovered why it is open only 4 Saturdays a year (bank holiday weekends in case you were wondering). They do weddings other Saturdays! We arrived in drizzle but left in definite rain. It was hardly a monsoon but enough for visibility through glasses to be tricky and the descent to Millington, with bank holiday traffic purring behind us, fairly unpleasant. A quick stop for a puncture repair (we can all mend them, you know, but it is only right that the lads get a chance to demonstrate their prowess) and before we knew it we were back at Stamford Bridge and heading towards home.

In my last report I sounded pretty demoralised with my efforts. Today it was good to be out. I still plodded last up the hills but I never had any wish to give up or get off. Thanks for previous words of encouragement and to those who wait. I’ve probably never done 70 miles before and yet at the end of it I felt tired but not wasted. I didn’t “take to my bed” as soon as I got in and was able to rally myself to go out in the evening. See you all in a few weeks.
