winter / turbo tyres

Post by MichaelCarter »

I'm looking for advice regarding purchasing new tyres for winter.

I'm after a tyre that will be ok for commuting on wintry (frosty) roads and will be OK for using on the turbo trainer (which I'm doing the majority of my cycling on). I can't be bothered swapping them round twice a day so looking for a tyre that would be OK with both. I do most of my shopping on Wiggle.

Any recommendations?

Thanks

Michael

Something cheap and cheerful. Anything cheap and cheerful in fact.

I use Bontrager Race XLite tyres in winter. Good puncture resistance and grip, but possibly a little spendy to use on a turbo. (https://www.sigmasport.co.uk/app/secure ... ilyID=2649). I value not getting punctures a lot in winter ;)

On the turbo, I'm still working my way through a stack of tyres I got for 3 quid each from Boswell's closing down sale.

Scwalbe Blizzard Sport tyres, good rolling characteristics and good puncture protection, Muzzy also uses them I think. You can buy a pair with tubes for about £15 off ebay, Oldham Cycles were also selling them cheap a month or so back, you could try an internet search for them.

Not sure about this but I can't help thinking that a hardwearing tyre that'd be good for the turbo would be also be a grip-lite tyre and hence less than ideal for winter roads?

Cheers for the tips Arthur, Andy, Dave. Will try and get hold of the recommended tyres. Much appreciated.

Yep Swalbe Blizzards - cheap & chearful - good rolling resistance, grippy, puncture resistant and you dont need tyre levers to take em off - but god knows what they're like on a turbo??

I've been using Swalbe Blizzards for a few years too. I agree that they are a good combination of low rolling res, lowish weight, puncture res, and miles per £. You do have to keep an eye on them though because as they wear they go a bit slick meaning you have to replace them sooner than other tyres - but given the price they are still economical option.

Alternatively, more up market, both me and Doc Savage got some Vittoria Open Pave tyres in 2005. Expensive at about £25 a pop, but mine lasted ages and Steve's still riding on his!

Might not be a bad thing, might shock me into actually putting more effort in... not sure what the Neighbours will think though, they must already think I'm a bit odd with this strange whirring noise combined with Neighbours / Home Away / Coronation Street on full blast - a loud bang too will probably get them calling the cops!
