3 Peaks Cyclo Cross 08 'It's not about the bike'

Took the family to see the 3 Peaks this year, a great event and an even better day out, the weather was very kind. We waited at the foot of the 2nd peak and by 11.45 Mr Jebb was at the bottom and powering his way to a 7th victory. We watched for a hour taking pictures and watching the different lines riders took, cheered on Charlie and decided to have a picnic. Sandwiches eaten we continued down the hill, rider's still passing us. I've ridden the event twice so appreciate the phyiscal and mental challenge, but out of all the 500 competitors one rider stands out, the guy was a vet probably 50+ wearing denim cut off shorts and trainers, his bike was a steel touring machine fitted with a 3 speed sturmey archer gear set. Now that guy has my utmost respect.
Anyone wish to continue with further adventures on a three speed

The obvious one is Ray Booty's straight out 100miles in 3-28 in 1956.

Wow, bike must mean nothing, if it did he could do it in under 2 hours maybe on the bikes we have
That time is insane I cant ever imagine that, 28.72mph average constantly over 100 miles, he must be better than any pro to ever be on a bike
He must have been superhuman.

Its worth thinking about isn't it:
no aerobars
no pointy helmet
no disc wheel
no turbo trainers
no carbo drinks
no hrm
no powertap
no speedo
no garmin
no variable gear mechanism
no freewheel
no lycra
no gels
no powerbars
ride 100miles to the start the day before
ride 100 miles home after the race
back to work on Monday

He must have had some lycra like shorts? Something tight.
Dunno how he did not cope without a garmin, I could not cope without it now I have one.

Wont have made any difference anyway whatever he is wearing is tight on him.
Don't get how he managed that average speed he looks quite thin, and his legs ain't got much muscle on by looks of it.

If you want it hosted on the site, send me an email with the photo.
If you have it somewhere else (flickr etc), then you can link to it: click on the 'Img' button above, paste in the URL, then click on the 'Img' button again. Make sure that "Disable BBCode in this post" isn't checked when you submit and you should be good to go.
