If the weather is bad or anyone wants a shorter ride you can head for home
from Hawes.
Let me know if you intend to come

Hi Will
If you really want to improve your climbng get your name down for next years l'Etape du Tour

most likely to be held in the French Alps. The climbs are measured in miles

not yards but there not quite as steep as some of the ones in Britain.

The Ride is a stage of the Tour de France so it always takes place approx a week before the pros do it. Usually early July. Its on closed roads. You usully take your own bike but you can hire decent ones in France. The cost is expensve if you go with an Sports Tours Agency but this years entry only fee was £125 but then you have to make your own way there. Start saving now and set it as target for next year. You know ou want to!

Hi there, by way of introduction, my name is Matt Green. Since I've been taking cycling a lot more seriously over the last year, I'd like to ride with you guys.
Would it be OK to meet up with people at exhibition square, this sunday, for the Dales ride? And how long do you expect it will it take you guys to do this ride?
(I have completed 100 mile rides before myself, but this ride I'd put closer to 220km, so I'd plan to leave you at Hawes and get the train back from Northallerton.)
Seeya soon

Was it a 100miles hilly?
Cant say exactly but usually 120mile rides are around 6-8hours but this is proberbly going to be alot more hillier, proberbly the hardest club run for me too so could take maybe abit longer I am guessing.

Over to Brid and back (Wolds, rolling). Another time into the Moors round Hawnby; that was pretty steep.
I'm doing about 200 miles a week, right now.

Intend to ride at a good pace to Otley approx 20mph, then the pace will drop
a bit and the ride will be more sociable but lumpy until the climb of fleetmoss which riders will do at their own pace.
Hard to give exact timings until I see who has turned up and what the weather is like. I plan on getting back to York by 7pm at the latest and will tailor the route to ensure that happens.

Cheers, Helen. I'm not experienced in group riding; are 'chain gang' like skills going to be required? (Sorry to be such a nooby). 20mph is pretty fast.
Yeah, I was thinking Hawes around 2 - 2:30, I have to be somewhere myself (much later). Anywho, I think if it turns out I can't hack it, then I'm happy to drop off; I wouldn't expect people to wait for me.
If you, or anyone, has any opinions or suggestions for me, I'd be happy to know them.
One more thing, on long rides like this I usually take a rucksack hydration pack for water and food... is that going to be a good or bad idea? (I can't think of any reason why it would be bad...)
Thanks a lot,
Matt

Well from my experience, over long rides with anything like a rucksack on my bag it leads to back pain and slows me down abit, honestly all you should need is 2 bottles.
20mph is fastish but I would not expect it to be chaingang sort of thing, I guess if you are not good in groups what I would do is sit on the back. I have not even done a chaingang myself yet :p
Well helen did say people can cut off somewhere for a shorter route, maybe there is another cut off for an even shorter route? I think you should give it a try tbh. Good thing is its not looking too hot and maybe abit of rain to cool everyone off too.
IMO, club rides are an awsome opportunity, each club ride I do, I get slightly better for the next one, its great
Anyway so how many people may there be on the club run? Be nice to have a big bunch

Hi guys, haven't been out with club run since before christmas. Not sure if I can make it all the way round so may need to take easy way home.
With regards to camel back, I've often thought about doing this myself but never tried it on a long road ride. I've always used two bottles on this ride and there are opportunites to get refills. I take some nutrient powder to add to my top ups.
The first time I did the ride I was petrified that I would run out of energy and had a bum bag full of stuff that I noshed all the way round.
Whatever happens take a waterproof. Two years ago we set off after a heat wave, on a morning with blue skies. By the time we got to Tan Hill it was raining and bitterly cold.

I plan to do this Sundays ride also, as well as two drinks bottles and a couple of energy bars in my pockets I presume we will have one or maybe two cafe stops (what do you think Helen?).
I will be happy to ride at at a pace which suits everyone and have the option of cutting it short if I need to as I have a race on Tuesday.

Guys
As we will not be a huge group we will head out on the A road to Knaresborough and on to Grassington that way.
Will not be riding chain gang style but will either take it in turns on the front and switch to riding in pairs when we are of the A road. You will be fine if you can sit in with the group averaging 20mph.
As mentioned do bring a waterproof and it does get a lot colder over there.
Bring pocket food. I'm not sure about stops depends on how we are doing
at the moment I'm planning on a shop stop or quick cafe in Hawes and a longer stop after the hills.Once we get to Hawes we will have a better idea of how we are getting on and will make a descion as to the route from there.
