Head to Cawood, then Tadcaster. Theres some reasonable hills ftom there towards Thorner.
Not ass hard as the stuff round Sherrif, but should only take 40mins to get to.

There a few reasonable hills around Bramham/Clifford but for proper hills you'd need to head for the Wolds.

17% sounds very precise - I wouldn't fret too much about lugging yourself up the steepest hills in Yorkshire, Will. Cycling's meant to be fun. Get out and ride on all sorts of roads and just bear in mind keeping smooth, keeping relaxed, getting more efficient. You'll get better at hills as time goes by, and you can practice climbing as part of everyday rides. As Arthur says, there's lots of rolling countryside out past Sherburn.

No but 17%+ hills are fun!, they where on my old bike I'm just back to square one, I'm off out to sherrif hutton later anyway its a nice ride up there, going to get my grip tape on the handle bars replaced first then go to haxby cycles and up to the hilly tt course from there and just take it steady around there.
Anyone want to have a ride up?

The Wolds are hilly, but usually once you get onto the top they are just rolling, so you have to go up the sides of the dales (not as in the Dales - as in valleys) to get most of the climbs. They also tend to be quite short. Theres a good climb out of Nunburnholme towards Londesborough, about 1km long and according to the map over 14%.
Also, the B1246 between Pocklington and Warter has good hills, if you come from Pocklington direction, then the first hill is the longest and is steep, and if you take the left at the top then you can keep climbing, or else there is 2 descents and a climb on the way to Warter.
Further north, Thixendale is in a valley, so every way out of there involves climbing, either short and steep or long and shallow.
Wolds are closer than Sherriff Hutton, but they involve having to cross A19 and A1079, and A166 for Thixendale, so they are 'harder' to get to in that way. If you do want to find the hills in an area, then get a OS map, as these will tell you contours and if the hill is particularly steep, as well as show tiny roads which a road map will not.

If you want to find some steeper hills i'd agree with Arthur M and head out towards the wolds. Maybe if you have a look around and explore you might find some good hills to do repeatedly even if they aren't very steep, my advice would just be to have a good look around but if you do want some steeper hills then head out to the wolds

Aye I might head out to the wolds if I can get there I'd probs get lost, there is one hill near me, probs about 10% then goes to about 15%, but its a dead end and very shorts and the other problem is you get people on MTB's flying over it on this great big ramp they built and it's so rough it might as well be called a dirt track. Problem with exploring is it means taking a map and going slower and stopping to read maps, not something I like to do

, I usually plan my routes on Bikely.

Yep

, I remember when it was smoother I used to climb up that on my MTB and I remember I was tired out before the first bit of that corner and had to stop, used to fly down it at like 28mph, would not dream of it now its that degraded!

Steepest climb in the wolds is one which runs from the village of Acklam to the transmitter mast at the top 1 in 5 (20%), not many people know about that one. There are plenty of tough climbs around there, Hanging Grimston, the climb from Bugthorpe to Acklam transmitter mast, Uncleby Wold, Levening, Worsendale Rise. Get an O/S map and you can see them.

Is that the one one which goes to the bend of the road to Leavening?
That's a nice little dig as well, from Leavening to Acklam.

No, it's m uch harder. At the top of the village where you go left to Leavening, turn right. It's hard because it's continuously steep with no let up in gradient.
