Thanks to Phil Bixby for the following press release sent out today - let's hope the Press print it.

Clifton's Come and Try It Time Trial
Report

Over thirty riders - most of them complete newcomers to competitive cycling - turned up and had a go at Clifton Cycling Club's "Come and Try It" event on Saturday morning. Held on a 5 mile course finishing in Stockton on the Forest, the event followed the format used for the first time last year, matching the London Tour de France prologue distance and aimed at giving first-timers a chance to compete - and win!

Local race ace Jamie Sharp of York Cycleworks posted the fastest time of 10:58, but in the spirit of the event the prizes - helmets donated by club partner Cycle Heaven - went to those with less experience of riding against the clock. The best newcomer prize went to John O'Donnell with a very creditable time of 12:45, with 18 year-old Will Thompson just six seconds behind. In the under-18's class, 16 year-old Arthur Marshall took home the prize with a time of 13:09, just edging out Rab Cullen - riding his first-ever time trial - by four seconds. Youth triumphed in competition between the women - but only just. Fourteen year-old Alice Scull took the prize with a time of 15:03, but all of the solo women riders were within ten seconds of her time in an amazingly close contest.

A number of families made a fun day out of it too, with the five members of the Barber family making it round on two bikes, trailer bikes and a child seat! Likewise a number of riders were surprised to be passed by four year old Siobhan Osman (with a little help from Clifton race regular, her dad Rob).

Race organiser Nick Scull was delighted with the turnout and with the enthusiasm on display. "Clifton is a club that welcomes anyone with a passion for cycling, and encourages everyone to explore different aspects of the sport. It was wonderful seeing newcomers to competition crossing the finish line with a smile on their face".

Clifton organises all sorts of activities for on- and off-road cycling, and the club website gives up-to date details at www.cliftoncc.org. A regular series of time trials on quiet, safe roads around Sheriff Hutton takes place on Thursday evenings and are a low-key, friendly way into competition for anyone who missed Saturday's event. Details, again, on the club's website.

I don't know how to add photos to these posts, but I guess they will be up somewhere on the site soon.

Was a good TT that, they should have that route as one of the thursday TT's but do 2 laps.

To add photo's best thing to do is create a free Photobucket account and you can upload your photo's to that and it is very easy to use.

I was planning on riding up to the Thursday evening TT this week from Exhibition Square (in front of the art gallery - the usual meeting place for the club weekend rides), setting off at 6:15 in order to be there in good time for signing on. If any of the newcomers from the Come And Try It fancy having a go on Thursday, it would give a chance to have a natter and answer any questions on the way up and would save anyone getting lost and ending up halfway to Terrington. If any of the other "regulars" feel like doing the same then we'll make a bigger, happier group :)

Hi Nick
Great to see the results. For me as a new comer and not knowing everyone's names it would be useful to have the start numbers. Then I could see how people did especially the ones starting just before and just after me.
A great day and introduction. Now hooked and nearly a new member!
Thanks
John

Hi,

Can I second John Banks' suggestion that race numbers are added to the results lists (also for the Thur TTs), for much the same reasons (new member, good to know who's who...).

Thanks,

Jason.
