Taking a deep breath here before adding my thoughts.
The surplus isn't that large and could easily be swallowed up if we make any losses or have an unexpected bill next year. So if it is spent it should be on
something simple which won't set a precedent. The shared tool box idea seems more complicated than first thought unless someone can come up with a way to make it a work.
My thoughts are to use some of the money to send a couple more members on a First Aid Course with the provision that they will be available to help at some of the club events.
My second thought was to use the money to give members a voucher towards purchase of club kit. Would need to speak to Cycle Heavon and work out how much and the best way to do it. I would be happy to sort it out.

How about club kit (or vouchers for) as prizes for the best juniors/unwaged over the season?

Not my decision but ? best steer clear of politics.

I don't think it was overtly political as I was merely targeting groups that I assume already receive club concessions. You could replace unwaged with students I suppose if you are really unhappy about it. Other options would be to award to have kit as a prize to the most improved rider.
My thinking behind the idea was that if money is to be used to promote the club by improving access to club kit, it would be better targeted at talented youngsters who have time to train but may not have the kit (or money to buy it) to enable them to train through out the winter. And more importantly, having done that training when they are first to cross the finish line they are wearing a Clifton top.

How many talented juniors do we have who compete in either open TT's or road races?

Are there any schemes through which the club can purchase group insurance for all members so that if anyone is involved in an incident, accident etc support is automatically available for making claims, costs etc.?

Small idea I know, but how about getting some rain capes for the use of marshalls when we do the club TT's to go with the signage. A lot of the marshalls ride out to do it but then can get very cold standing in the rain.

I know its not what you were asking but there were a 11 Juniors in the club time trial series. Whether they are talented or not is a mater of opinion, and the better ones with encouragement will go on to open TT's and / or road races. They will also still be seen on the road when they go out training.
I just think it is a bit sad going to the square on Saturdays and seeing many of the juniors in scruffy second hand kit and potentially lacking the gear to ride all year round. A general discount voucher scheme would probably benefit better off club members who can afford to buy new kit anyway, and unlikely to help those with no money. Having some form of competitive element would ensure that those benefiting from the scheme would have to work to get that benefit.
I make no apologies if people feel that is too political. Any democratic process with people of differing opinions will inevitably be political. The problem at the moment is that we are getting the worst kind of politics focusing on why we can't do anything which will inevitably lead to a very poor option. Club funds being wasted by inflation.
I would suggest that we need a limited range of packages, including not spending any money, that could be put to an AGM. Any idea that is not completely unworkable gets put into a doodle poll. Club members with access online could then vote on all the available options and the 2 or 3 most popular options could then be developed further an be voted on at the AGM.
Oh and whilst I can think of negatives, I would put forward rain capes as a good idea.

Not many people wear second hand kit, all looks fairly neat and tidy to me, the only one as far as I can see wearing second hand kit is me but I'm not a junior

I do wonder what people think something though when they see me in the old style Clifton CC jersey.

What about having a evening where members can come along and swap tips on repairing bikes. For example:
What to check on a suspension fork to make sure its running OK.
How to setup the correct sag on a suspension fork for your weight.
Truing a wheel.
etc.
The funds could pay for the venue and maybe some nibbles.
Also maybe we could look at getting together with a bike shop or the York recycling network to look at setting up a bike maintenance course. I don't nessarily think we have to subsidise it but we might get a discount by doing a block booking.

Please be aware that this Discussion is being watched with interest and taken seriously by those of us on the Committee. We have a fair bit of time to discuss this in December but we do need your ideas.
As far as I'm aware there's no politics involved here. However, any ideas have to be seen as a fair way to use club funds, most of which has come from subs after all, and workable. I see the committee's role is to come up with some framework/guidelines on what we spend funds on then allow the wider membership to come up with and, more importantly, help implement the ideas.
So let's keep this thread going and give us plenty of ideas to sift through in December.
How about?;
-Skills Coaching
-Club Room (for turbo sessions, maintenance sessions etc)
-Sports Science coaching
-More publicity
-Club yacht with well stocked bar
Discuss....

I was going to start a new thread for this, but perhaps it fits in with the "Club Room" suggestion above...
There was some pretty intrepid and inspirational stuff in the recent Cliftonite - would any of the authors be prepared to get some slides together and give a mini presentation one evening (ideally in a room above a well-stocked pub)? It would be a good way to meet fellow members off of the bike, have a night away from the turbo and get some inspiration for next year. Perhaps the club surplus could pay for the room, projector hire etc and maybe some nibbles?
If there were enough willing volunteers to present, we might be able to get say one event a month / every six weeks - that will soon see us through to the new year and the lighter evenings. Alternatively, we could alternate with some of the other topics suggested above (maintenance, sports science coaching etc). I've not got anything even marginally exciting to present, but I'd be prepared to volunteer for "arranging" duties.
Jason.

Yacht sounds good, how about a chef to cook food too?
On a serious note, if there is a junior section of riders looking to step up and compete in BC Races/ MTB races etc, then a group coaching session/ seminar with a qualified coach/ sports scientist could help them make some informed choices when it comes to training. This wouldnt need to cost a fortune as Im sure St Johns College would help us out.
From conversations Ive had out on the road and posts Ive read on here there are many people not qualified in this area dishing out advise, ok some is good and sometimes its also bad.
We must have another Kit Gilham within our ranks, so why not help the youngsters realise/ achieve there potential.
