Another busy family weekend for me, so I escaped on Friday afternoon for another tour of the Wetwang course trying to memorise the potholes. Great tailwind pushed me out through Huggate and up Life Hill. It was also very exciting to see a road resurfacing crew in Wetwang, but alas they were sticking to the main road, not the hill where the cow-sized craters are.

After one circuit I headed back to York via Fimber and Rob's (Second-)Last Thixendale road - beautiful despite the headwind whistling along it! I disturbed half a dozen deer at the Wharram junction too.

Decided to email the race organizer at Hull & East Riding to mention the resurfacing work - and it turns out that the council have promised a 'crack pot hole crew' to fill up the craters. Sorry Muzzy...

No, this is good Tom. I was kind of wondering in this day and age how the event had possibly made it through a risk assessment? I will sleep easily between now and the event! But only if it is a crack pot hole crew and not a crackpot hole crew - you never know with the cuts!

As mentioned I had an enjoyable weekend off road racing (and reading reports I think I would have been disappointed if I had entered either of the two options?) & joined the Sunday club runners as far as Thonton Le Dale. A new bit of road/track / farmyard was discovered between Kirby Misperton and Thornton Le Dale which meant we missed a stretch of main road. Pushing on from Thornton I remembered a right turn at the next village, Wilton which cuts a corner off and avoids more main roads. By Yedingham I was into the wind, Rillington, left for Thorpe Bassett and the long, steady climb to the top of Settrington bank. Langton and left onto the Gally Gap road but I took the sensible option of turning right & into the sheltered lanes for Howsham, Bossall, Sand Hutton and Warthill. 74 miles at over 18 mph. I finished strongly but have been knackered ever since!
