From the Garmin stats from last yr (which I need to check to confirm) I would have thought there was nearly has much climbing involved even though its about 12 miles less distance. But at least because of the heat it was good training for the l'Etape in July.

No, it isn't just you Jon. I think pace has a bit to do with it as well - the Tan Hill is usually a slightly more leisurely affair as far as I recall which may account for why it seems easier. Don't forget that the Tan Hill is basically flat for the first and last sections and with steady away climbs rather than the up/down/up/down nature of Sunday's ride

... And so I arrived at Amotherby where I decided enough was enough, which was a bit of a bummer ...

... but on the basis of "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" ...

121.4 miles on the clock; an ace day out; north yorks moors at their best; superb route, superb weather; an average speed only around 1.5 mph slower that Dr Dave's and Ian H's (which makes me very happy), about 2,500 metres of climbing - roughly the same as the previous weekend, which I had managed with significantly less pain and anguish; but above all the much appreciated patience of the rest of the group who so kindly waited for me with monotonous regularity.

Honourable mention for Rob who kept me going between Riseborough and Amotherby.

The final irony: as I loaded the the bike into the car the rear tyre was flat - just about summed up my day.

And yes it was definitely tougher than Tan Hill for me.

I knew Mal was in serious trouble when he stopped being grumpy.....

Memorable moments not yet mentioned - That descent off Glaisdale Rigg - The view across the bay at Runswick, which JonG commented could have been the Med - the 30% climb back up from the beach on a full stomach! - the swarm of greenfly near Stape (we had to scrape several kilos off at Newton...) - look how low Egton is on Ian Hs profile, sort of explains the climb out.

I lost my map and was a bit hazy about the route north of Lealholme and as a result we nearly ended up at Sands End, thanks for your patience everyone.

With hindsight maybe this should have been a 3 pointer....

Thanks for sunday rob, it really was quite a day!
I certainly thought it was tougher than tan hill last year and I'm pretty sure that I felt fresher after the Fred whitton!!
So possibly a four pointer......

Thanks again
Tim
