Any idea how to fix the breaks on my old bike as even at the furthest position the pads are touching the wheel.

The only idea apart from new breaks is to cut about 2mm of the rubber off the pad to make it not go on the tyre?

Have to use this bike its gonna do about 600 miles until I get my main one working again.

Do you mean the rim is wider? If so, release the screw that clamps the cable and re-clamp it in a position where the pads are roughly right with the adjuster at mid-adjustment.

No the rims ain't wider, I haven't even changed the wheels around yet.

You know how the brake pads are secured on? Well I've moved the bolt as far up as I can and also tried rotating slightly but it wont do any good they still come into contact with the tyre.

So you mean they're touching the tyre, not the wheel? Can you slide the pads/carriers further down if you release the clamping screw? Position them where they should be (ie just on the rim) and pull the brakes on at the lever to pinch them against the rim so they don't move, and then tighten the clamping screws...?

I have moved them down as far as they will go, they wont go any lower and when I pull the braked on I can clearly see it is touching the tyre and no matter how I move it, the brake pads still touch the tyre.

No I haven't bookmarked it, I don't bookmark anything I just remember it/ keep it on an open tab in Opera/Chrome.

The brake pad has a lip like that although I don't see why it would make it impossible to align it's not catching the wheel, I think the brakes must not be correct, need to go a ghetto job on this though as I'm not paying for new brakes.

Maybe I could bent the caliper arm? They must be cheapo brakes these on the carrera so surely wont snap.

Will, if the pad's got a lip due to the bottom edge overlapping the braking surface of the rim, I can't see how the top edge can at the same time be overlapping the rim and contacting the tyre unless it really has drastically wrong brakes and the pad is wider than the braking surface of the rim... do you have a pic of it?

Remember that Will has only one bike for everything. Commuting wears out bikes far faster than serious rides ime.

It looks from the photos as though the reach of the brakes is too short for the wheel/frame, but I'm getting out of my depth here - anyone else?

I think it is..

I need to do a ghetto mod to get it to work. Any suggestions?

Perhaps a silly question but is the wheel fitted fully into the slot/drop outs?

Also I had this problem when I tried to upgrade to 105 on my trek pilot and the bike was fitted with the longer reach sora brakes. In other words are the brake calipers the short reach ones?

You need brake calipers with a 57mm drop, that will sort your problems
