Are you sure your old cassette is same number of gears as new one, Will? And anyway, isn't the little ring on your new bike a 34T or similar, giving you a pretty seriously low lowest gear?
On my new ring the little ring is the same size, but the big sprocket ir ring on the cassette was a 32 on my old bike, on my new bike the biggest is a 25, big hit on the hills.

Both 9spd, but I dont fancy putting MTB style gears on a decent road bike.

Dont know if I'll be doing the ron kit now, just checked the weather, heavy rain that day :(

Dont believe everything you see on the internet. According to Metcheck its going to be fine and on the the BBC Local forecast not bad either.

I must admit though I might have second thoughts if the weather is rubbish but I will leave the decision until Sat morning and I'll probably be at Cawood around 7am if I choose to go so may miss you if you set off earlier.

See you at the racecourse Will, maybe

I'll also be doing the 150km version of this on Saturday and I invite anyone who was planning to do the the faster social ride from the square with me to come along too.

Apologies if I'm reiterating info. given by others above, but it didn't seem clear to me from the CTC website whether or not you could just turn up on the day and ride. So i've been in contact with them and they confirm that you can indeed just turn up, register, pay and ride. They'd appreciate the correct change (£15 for non CTC members, £12.50 for members) and they have even promised to mod. the RK webpage to make all this clear!

Registration "officially" opens at 07:40 in the Rally Information Tent on the Knavesmire and the 150k ride departs the Knavesmire at 08:00.

See you Sat

I'll be at that seat at the round about at 7am then, I'm just going to cope with it if it rains hopefully I'll have some protection from the weather by then though!.

I seen you yesterday up on the road up to bishopwood when you went past the road to selby.

On the day will I still need money for cafe stops or is there in water or bits of food included along the way?

Yeah, sorry about cycling past you the other night was'nt sure it was you at first. I was on a bit of a mission.

I personally always carry some money when out riding you just never know if you will need it, so yes bring some. There are two main controls at Danby and Marton where food is available to buy.

NP I did the same once as I was on a mission to get 20mph average over 10 miles :p

Hmm I'll bring a fiver for food and fill up with water on the way.

Has your bike for a tripple on it and like 25 biggest gear at the back?

Currently it has a standard 53/39 chainring set up with a 27 sprocket at the back been the biggest. I will be changing it however to a 50/34 chainset with the same cassette.

I wouldnt worry about whether you will get up the hills because assuming your small ring on the triple is a 30 that'll give you a 32inch gear where as mine only has low gear of 34 inch and I can get up some steep hill, just!!! :D

And remember you're younger and most importantly lighter than me giving a better power/weight ratio without sounding too technical

Hopefully see you Sat morning

I've got an 11-25 cassette and the chainset is a 50-34 on mine, I'll feel much happier when I come home from sherrif hutton tonight I think as I'll know what I'm like up the hills (17%), I know I wont get up that rosedale chimney though, maybe I'll get half way up.

The difficulty you will find with Rosedale Chimney if you attempt it is finding the right balance on the bike. Weight too far back you wheelie and too forward you may lose traction on the back wheel, more so in the wet. Its' the 2 main (I think!) bends that are 1 in 3 its not it average gradient but its close to that. It did at least feel like it when I walked it.

Will 2 things

First - bring more than £5 cash, you will want pocketfood and its worth putting
something in your bottle, either the squash or juice mix.

Secondly having gone up Rosedale about 10 times, twice this year, its still not a climb I'm sure of making.Road conditions and cars make a difference.
I split the climb in to 4-arrive having looked after my legs, get up to the cattle grid as comfortable as possible, put in a real dig round the hairpins leaving enough speed not to pull a wheelie on the steep section afterwards, keep spinning to the top and enjoy the feeling of having done it.

I'd love it if I got up, sadly going up something that steep I cant spin, I just plan to get off the saddle and try and keep a rythem going, I dont want to fall off though I have never been up a 33% hill ever. How is it not a climb? Any steeper and you'll be rock climbing

Ron kit is not a race is it? The thing that I dont like is seeing people pull away and me getting left in the dust, I'm ok as long as I'm not on my own miles behind everyone. The problem I noticed on saturday after the TT when I went on a ride after is going up hills it was harder due to the 25 ring but also when the hills leveled out sort of and was only a slight slope it still felt really hard and was struggling to get any speed at all, was stuck around 9mph when it was hardly steep at all.

Better get used to that if you intend to stick with cycling - no matter how good you get there will always be someone much better

Still I think we're doing this as a club, so there'll be plenty of Cliftonites to ride with no matter what.

As one who was there... ...You shouldn't find the 34/25 gearing problematic on those hills (I was on 39/23  ) but it's all about learning to pace yourself. If you overcook it on the steep bits you're weak as wet lettuce when you get to the easier bits. As I said at the time, learn to stay seated, stick it in a gear where you can keep the pedals turning, sit up so you open your chest up and can fill your lungs and let the big muscles round your backside do some work. Save getting up out of the saddle for the really steep bits. And be patient - bear in mind some of us have been doing this for years (or are built like whippets and are natural climbers) - it may take a while (as in months/years) to get good at.

As Broomwagon says, on a ride like the Ron Kit you'll always have company.
