Weekend Up-date

Post by Helen »

What a difference in the weather on Saturday and Sunday this weekend.
Waving to the hardy souls on Saturday who braved the freezing cold to turn up in the square, I hurried up to the warmth offered by the shops and bought my son a balaclava and thermal gloves. Yes,it has been that cold,he had asked for them. It had warmed up by Sunday and although it was windy we were lucky enough not to get wet.
Four of us turned up for the club run ,Bernard,Richard and Willy, out with us for the first time since his fall on the Xmas lunch ride.
He is still in a lot of pain especially,of the bike, but was good company all day. Bernard lead us out past Selby on what Willy suggested could be called a 3 power stations tour especially as Bernard has also got large amount of local knowledge.
75 mile ride from the square at a very sociable pace. Richard said it made a good bridge between Kevin's and Howard's ride. Bernard will be out again next week and has voluntered to lead a similar ride. Good opportunity if you haven't done a Sunday ride before or if like Willy you are coming back after illness or injury to come along.
How did everyone else get on ?

I can report on Howards ride: Howard, Chris C, Dave C, Richard (sorry no surname), Ginny and myself went to Kirkbymoorside via Crakye & Ampleforth, then back via Castle Howard, Bossall etc.

It was a nice bright day but the temperature never got above 0 degrees and the wind made it seem far colder - consequently it was a good hard 77 miles where fingers and toes never really got properly warm.

We met up with Cath and Claire in the cafe which was warm and good value (although the proprietors of Birdsall Grange have nothing to fear competition wise!).

On the way back we traversed some muddy roads which unfortunately resulted in Ginny's front wheel/mudguard interface becoming persistently clogged with crud - acting as an effective resistance device. Efforts to clear this weren't altogether successful - I don't know how she managed to keep smiling or moving at such a steady pace!

We returned by 4:45 - it was noticeably warmer going through the traffic in town and the warm post-ride shower was one of the more appreciated ones for ages. Thanks to all for a good day out.

First ride of 2009 for me due to a persistant cold and chest infection, went out on my own on Sunday for a very steady 32 mile ride to Kirkham Abbey and back.

Was the route Drax, eggborough and ferrybridge?

If so, it's always the weekends I'm not there the most interesting rides happen, eh, well thats life :(

I've not really done much cycling this weekend, got some sort of virus or something causing certain parts of my body to ache, like my lower back aches constantly, legs etc.., I got out yesterday for 6 miles but the wind was so strong although it pushed be through oxford rd at about 28mph back to the flat which was nice.

It was oddly hot too!!!

Well Kevin's ride started normally enough until Russell's pedal cleat broke going through Beniborough Hall where we also encountered some tempromental horses. Once on our way again we were trouble free until just before Knareborough when Michael had a more serious problem with his bike when is rear derailleur decided to become mangled in his rear wheel. After about what seemed like ages it was decide tat Kevn would accompany Michael back to York and Dave Anson took the reins to the cafe. The journey back back was uneventful but very cold but I have to pay homage to Kevin for not only looking after Michael but for heading out again to meet with us on the road from Tockwith to Long Marston to see us back to York. A very nice 85 miles for me. See some of you Friday for the Dinner.

I spent the weekend watching the National cyclo-cross Champs at Peel Park, in my hometown of Bradford. The weather affected both days in very different ways but I didn't get rained on and saw some amazing riding.

Will, if you've got the flu virus that's been doing the rounds, just rest up until you feel vaguely normal again.

I've just about recovered from my dose of it; last week was way too cold to do anything strenuous out on the roads (and work's been too busy to allow anything steady but more extensive) and even doing threshold sessions on the turbo my chest was "rattling" rather ominously. Weekend was full of work but I treated myself to another monster session on the turbo and persuaded myself it was better than freezing to death.

This week I plan to ride my bike somewhere, other than in my office, and back again!

I did 18 miles today round Manchester, did it quite good was happy, felt fine, until about half a mile from the flat my chest started again, dunno why, it just feels like sort of heavy weight now and again on the chest. I'm going to book an appointment at the docs tomorrow as I got to go about my knee anyway.
