Weekend round up - 6th/7th December

Christmas lunch write up

Most people will know that the ride out on Saturday turned in to a stay on your bike survival test. It didn't start like that. After the snow during the week the weather on Saturday seemed perfect for a mornings ride followed by a good lunch. Riding in to York the roads were clear and the traffic light.
The longer ride group set of first and stayed on the A19 until the Benningbrough turn off. We had a hint of what things might be like when we stopped at a side road to re-group and Dave hit ice and came down. From Alne to Easingwold the road was awful. I think I walked most of it, when you thought it looked better, you were soon back on ice. There were several falls but luckily no one was badly hurt and we all made it to Flaxton. We then heard about the shoreter groups ride and Steve's injury.
Lunch was really good - the pub was warm, the owners and staff very friendly and the food was good. A few of us had to leave early so I hope everyone who stayed on enjoyed their mince pies and coffee and got home okay.

How were conditions on Sunday?

As Helen has said we had great fun on Saturday morning - I suppose it all goes towards building up a comprehensive cycling education. Watching several cyclists all sliding and slipping like ducks on a frozen pond before crashing to the ground was both fascinating and alarming in equal measure.

The meal was excellent. Our hosts were friendly and attentive and whilst the new venue probably was a little removed from a traditional cyclists haunt we were very well looked after. Unfortunately we all had to leave before coffee and mince pies owing to the need to get home before too late.

How was Sunday Dave?

Interesting ride on Saturday as already described. The Food was excellent at Flaxton.

On Sunday 5 of us set off for Masham, Rob, Paul, Ian, Richard and myself.

Kept to the bus route type roads and although there was frost on the roads we didn't experience any black ice like Saturday.
Lovely sunny day and back by 2.45pm 78 miles.

Claire came across a prostrate Tony Fewster on Saturday as he'd come off on the ice at Warthill. Tony is nearly 80. Claire saw him home and it looks as though he'll be OK.

Once again it appears that those riding on Sunday got the best deal weather wise. Paul, Ian K and myself had planned a jaunt over Jordon's, but even though it was mostly clear all the way to Masham we took the discretion of sticking to the lower ground back down through Grewelthorpe, Ripon and Knaresborough. Quite a bit more snow still lieing up at Masham.

The meal at Flaxton was great - thanks very much to everyone who organised it, but no thanks to NYCC for (not) gritting the Alne road.
I was very impressed by the choice of real ales there, but I'll have to go back to sample the rest as I had to get home before dark. For some reason the Banking crisis loomed large in the pub, but that's another story (and thread).
Didn't venture out on Sunday as the ice looked even worse. Fine this morning for commuting though...

What a suprising day Saturday turned out to be, first of all I wish Steve S and Willy H a speedy recovery from their injuries, the black ice in parts took all of us by suprise.

As for the meal it was extremely good and the host was very freindly.

Thanks to who did the organisation and as Tom said I will also have to go back there to sample a few more of their real ales.

Sorry to have to rush off and miss the coffee and mince pies but i had to get home as I was going out later for an other xmas dinner.

'a prostrate Tony'

Robert is always prone to exaggeration!!

Tony was infact shaking himself down whan I came across him on Saturday morning, over Warthill way. He'd fallen on some black ice just after the bridge (remember bridges for ice alerts!).
He's a tough cookie, old Tony, and although rather white and visibly shaken, he recovered enough for us to ride together back to his home. However, armed with this warning, I then kept to non icey lanes for my few hours Sat am.

Sunday am I was also careful for my 2 hour window of opportunity and kept to the B road out to Brandsby, so again maanged to get a 30ish ride without ice and back home in time for the Rowntree Panto!

Hope all the sore bits are recovering guys.

Another 'eventfull' ride out on Saturday. I was one of the 'sliders', 3 times in fact. No injuries to report thankfully, to be honest I was more concerned about the bike.

That aside it was a good meal and good day, thank you to everone who organised it. Despite the ice it was good day for riding, shame we didnt do the scheduled ride but with my ride to York and back I still managed 74 miles albeit at a disapointing av speed because of the walking. I did however forget about the cycle path on the way home and nearly came a cropper for a fourth time that day but managed to negotiate it safely. I used to like cold sunny days but might think twice before setting out.

Anyway hope to see you again in couple of weeks as I really must get some Xmas shopping done next weekend!

I think on future 'Ice Alert' rides there'll be a lot of: "after you" "no. I do insist, after you!"
So much better when there some ICE CANARIES ahead of you!
I've had my turn, over to others now!

My Sunday ride followed Rob's upto Helperby a few minutes behind, after which I turned towards Aldwark village where conditions were interesting with frozen slush & black ice - both feet off whilst crossing these has both where close to each other with the black stuff coming after the slush; so I was at least half prepared. The bridge was a bit slippery on the decking but seeing as I was the first to cross on the day that was to be expected.
I then rode via Arkendale to Copgrove before heading south to Knaresborough & then Tockwith to a good lunch for a fiver, followed by a good sing song etc before more tea & cakes all for the fiver & something in the collection plate - so a very enjoyable day was had, maybe others might join me next year
