Friday's Feel Good Post

Post by Helen »

Happy story in the Times yesterday just to remind us all of the joy of cycling.
It's about the Jagonari Centre Muslim Women's cycling club in East London.
They started up 3 years ago using Dutch bikes to teach the local women how to ride in a tiny courtyard. They have moved on to using folding bikes and those with low crossbars to accommodate traditional clothes. Their members include Rajana"I'm a bit of a rebel"on the raciest bike in her hijab to grandma Naz who has knee problems. They have taken to the roads and joined in group rides and have a Saturday morning club for girls where they cycle to a local park ignoring adult instructions about sensible riding and race each other across the grass.
Many of the men in their community do not agree and their comments could come out of a letters page from a 1890's newspaper.
The man who said
"Women should not be riding bikes. They are stimulating themselves. If they want to stimulate themselves they should get a man"
apart from being desperate has obviously never ridden a bike.
A snippet for Kevin
A member appears to be making a beeline for a group lounging on the grass. The leader asks "Do you know how not to hit someone ?"
After some thought one pipes up "Brakes ?"
