As Simon has discovered, choice of gear is critical to avoid 'spinning out' too early.
I used fixed for several years as both a commuter bike and for club runs in the winter. Less to go wrong, easier to control in traffic, lighter and it builds your legs up like nothing else. Just be careful if using on a club run that your 'mates' don't box you in before a steep hill so you can't get a run up. It's much more amusing for them than it is for you.
