Olympics 2012

Post by MichaelCarter »

So the Olympics are over and the cyclists are the number one British team. Beijing was tainted yes (and lets all hope that the worlds politicians recognise and finally do something about that), but purely thinking about cycling....

The Brits were incredible, the only member of the track team who didn't get a medal has a consolation 4 Tour de France stage wins, and for me the star was Shanaze Reade, who's attitude to not settle for silver, and give it her all, was inspiring.

Looking forward, you never know, a 2012 gold medal winner could be reading this now, but not know where to start. If you're in the York region, all you need to do is say a tentaive hello on here or turn up to any one of the many rides, and in four years time you might be sharing a sofa with Sue Barker saying "it all started when I first went out with Clifton Cycling Club!"

(and if you're old like me, one of the guys who beat Wiggins and Cavendish was 43 so there is hope!)

I wish I was gonna be in the olympics in 4 years, would be very amazing me thinks.

Whats this talk about beijing been tainted? The fact for some odd reason they won most things?

I have a feeling the UK one wont be as good, I just think of terminal 5 and then think of what could happen to the olympics....

no, but ask on your next ride, its a very complex topic

Be positive! I'm talking about cycling though, not buildings.

Maybe they'll win at cycling again, I dont see any reason why not, I was just saying about the olympics on a whole, proberbly get messed up, loads might go wrong, just like terminal 5, I'm negative and positive.

I too thought the Olympic cycling was fantastic. What gets me is that when you think about it there are very few cycling events - yet we managed medals in most and on the track got gold & silver or bronze in several which shows the depth and what talent there is coming to fruition.
I was particularly impressed with Nicole Cookes win - that was a tough race and they raced as a team. I was also pleased to see Emma Pooley double up in the time trial and come away with silver - consolation for some clever riding in the road race.
I feel sure the best from Shannaze Read is yet to come - but it won't be in BMX!
The success sets a bench mark for most of the other sports. Maybe with the exception of the rowing and sailing I think the others got off lightly thanks to top performances from a few talented individuals. As for athletics.......

I have some concerns though about where a club such as ours sits with this success. Bearing in mind Nicole Cooke was womens national senior road champ when she was 16 and Mark Cavendish won a stage in the Girvan when he was 18, the Clifton Olympic talent pool needs to be young, ambitious and steered quickly in the right direction.
I'm also concerned that British Cyclings Yorkshire Region is happier organising all the National Champs than coordinating events for its members.
