TLI Milby

Post by tomf »

A good night for Clifton I think. Lots showed up again, including first timers. It was a sunny breezy evening, no rain, and a good course.

I was in the middle group and managed to get round upright from start to finish, which was a great relief. The pace seemed pretty aggressive and I spent most of the time hanging round at the back minding my own business. As far as I can tell, the front group splintered, and the scratch group never reached us. I was caught napping at the final sprint but several Clifton riders weren't!

It was indeed pretty brisk. Andrew M and Arnie off in the first group, Matt, Paul B, Ian H, Tom and me off in the second, and Muzzy in the scratch group (and apologies if I missed anyone). Helped by Cliff stretching the gaps a bit, and a collective decision among the Chevin riders to go like stink, the second group hammered round, picking up the remnants of the first group by the third lap. A few attempts were made off the front on the last lap but it all came down to a sprint up the final climb. Matt did a fine job to win it by half a wheel, I got fourth and Paul B got sixth - neatly counterbalancing the three Chevin riders who took second/third/tenth and, by my calculation, stretching our lead in the team shield.

Two more to go! Aldborough in two weeks and Kirby Hill in four! Come on team, let's get our name on the silverware again!

Congratulations to all esp Matt - you can be keeper of the shield next year for winning!
I managed a lap. Had worked ok up to then but was suffering like hell and not able to recover. Usual TLI problems imo - too much time to make up & too few riders in the scratch group and too many better riders able to start in groups ahead. I think we had about 10 in our group starting at least 2 mins behind a group of 20. We started too fast and when I was dropped the rest of the scratch group were attacking one another! Would have carried on but dropped me water bottle.
Frustrating as I wasn't expecting to be riding anything this week and it was a toss up between this and a BC evening race tonight. So not exactly a tenner well spent.
I may get my head together for the next one as its the only decent circuit and they need the shield back.

Some good Photos there, I've always wanted one of me after breaking away from the bunch, unfortunately it was from the back, went on to drop out not feeling too well, Decided not to do Thursdays TT as I still feel very tired, just hope I feel ok for the 3 bridges which I am looking forward to on Sunday.
