Weekend round-up 27th/28st June

Post by Dr Dave »

Warm sunshine on Saturday - at last! 12 Inters left the square bound for Richmond: Dave C, Ian H, Maple-leaf Tony, another Ian, John Green (new member - he's paid but not received anything yet Billy....), Scott - a welcome return - Rich, Jon G, Kevin, Pete S, self and a chap whose name I forget but whom I shall call Dork disc man :D
The ride got off to a late start after Ian H found his front tyre flat on setting off but having fixed this we headed for Aldwark Bridge into a surprisingly strong north-westerly breeze. Boroughbridge, then Ripon - where a navigational fail from the route picker resulted in a short detour - then West Tanfield, Middleham, Wensley and up to Leyburn.
By this time a combination of the delayed start and the headwind meant that stomachs were rumbling and so we descended on our friends at the Posthorn who kindly made some Reserved tables available to us. Food ordered a route discussion resulted in a consensus that time was passing and that perhaps a return to York via Bedale was in order. Never one to dragoon an unwilling pack around a route just because it was the original plan (well, not often  ) I acquiesced with the democratically determined decision and we came home via Bedale (via Finghall), Topcliffe, Helperby, Huby and Haxby. The wind was a great help and before we knew it we were back in York.
Good riding all round with most riders finding their way to the front at times, nice to have a flatter ride for a change - maybe try and fit in a few hills next week.....
Thanks to all for the good company and fun :D

Edit: forgot to mention that we were discussing the progress of the Coast-to-coasters. Hope the prevailing wind made it easier than it might have been

Thanks Dave.
The guy who'd not had the opportunity to remove the dork disc from his new Spesh Roubaix was "full-gas" James.

Much better day out than last weekend :)
My Garmin recorded 181Km traveled, 1072m climbed and an average speed of 29.0Kph for this abridged, "flatter" ride, equating to 112 miles, 3,517 feet climbed and an average speed of 18mph for the metrically challenged :P

It was the Coast to Coast Sportive for me yesterday along with 16 colleagues and associates optimistically named "Crockett's Rockets" (Not optimistic for all of us as one of our guys finished just inside the top 10). Bumped into the Clifton CC crew of Fin, Jenny, Graham, John, Matt and Dave at the start then waited for half an hour for our crew to sort themselves out and got on the road at 7:20 on a beautiful bright calm morning.

Hardknott and Wrynose were climbed with the sun beating down on us even at the relatively early hour and we tried to keep most of the team together over these two beasts then after that a few natural groups formed.

As we left the lakes we picked up a strengthening Westerly wind which stayed with us for the rest of the day and really helped make the ride enjoyable and not as difficult as expected. We saw Fin, Dave and Jenny on the road but never saw Graham, John and Matt although looking at the finish times we must have passed them somewhere, probably at a feed station as these were manic with bikes and riders strewn everywhere.

I had expected the section through the Moors to be really tough with 120 miles in the legs but the tailwind had helped keep us relatively fresh and we finished strongly in perfect sunny weather passing a lot of people who had maybe pushed a bit hard at the beginning and were suffering on the steep sharp climbs.

A great day out, could have been very different in poor weather or with an easterly wind though!

Thanks Tony. My legs certainly felt better this morning than on other Sundays which does reinforce your impression and serves to demonstrate that it is the conditions and the hills that make a ride tough rather than the mileage. Cruising on flattish terrain means that unless you are pulling on the front the effort - and thus the cumulative load on the body - is relatively modest. Hammering up hills on the other hand gives you no place to hide and wears down your reserves. Roll-on next weekend.....

With all the fixture congestion over this week just gone, it was down to just 3 of us (me along with Eric and Steen) to leave the Square early on Sunday. This was to be Eric’s Clifton Clubride Swansong and he was being doubly careful not to break a collarbone before this year’s attempt at LESJOGY (Land’s End, Skye, John O’Groats, York) ride and thence return to Boston.

It was a morning of nagging cross-headwind and swirling drizzly showers. These were just enough to get you wet and we were repeatedly donning and doffing damp capes. Nidderdale, Greenhow – conditions became quite challenging on the high ground. Near Burnsall, Steen commented that “it’d be quite nice along here in summer!” A few calories in a farm shop café in Cracoe, then on through more showers to Airton, Settle, Ingleton.
The weather finally brighten up for the ride up Kings Dale, then the fabulous, tortuous drop into Dentdale, with a classics Yorkshire Dales view in front of us. Eric claimed that this was the UK riding he would miss the most. In Dent village, the furthest point, we realised my back tyre was pretty shredded and we fitted all three tyre boots we were carrying in an attempt to hold it together.
Up onto the Coal Road past Dent Station, the air pressure was rising fast, so much so that Eric spotted that our altimeters thought we were going downhill…..
Another plateful of calories in Hawes before a tailwind ride home, averaging 30kph to York, through the early evening sunshine.
As predicted, definitely the hardest ride so far this year, and I for one am still a bit fragile today. 270km, 3200m of climb, 25 point something kph and some pretty challenging conditions. Well done chaps, and bonne route Eric.

Couldn’t decide between the “A” and “K” rides on Saturday but eventually joined Kevin and the gang - Claire, DaveI, Dr. Joe, JohnC, Ben, MarkB, Arny, Chris and Nigel - on the ride to Driffield. Conditions were near perfect, following the soaking we’d received the previous Saturday, but I was in a bit of a grumpy mood as we headed out of town, so apologies all. I’ll put it down to a bit of over-indulgence at a retirement do on Thursday evening catching up with me somewhat.

Following the usual out of town dash we were soon heading towards Claxton and then left out of Leavening. Chris had an issue with the lock nut on his cassette before Settrington and so he headed off to a bike shop at Malton as the rest of us tackled Settrington Bank. Not sure what climb I was thinking of, maybe Nunburnholme, but Settrington Bank didn’t seem to go on for as long as I remembered. A rapid blast from Cowlam to Driffield blew the cobwebs away completely and I was ready for lunch at Driffield, where the sun-worshippers ate al fresco while the fairer-skinned stayed indoors.

Driffield to Huggate often takes its toll on unsuspecting legs but we had sufficient numbers to pull the slightly fragmented groups along. Arny headed home after Millington and MarkB did likewise at Stamford Bridge. We split further before Warthill with a tidy group of Kevin, Nigel, Claire and myself making short work of the final stretch back to York.

Bang on 85 miles door to door and another good ride.

Sunday was Clifton C.C. Road Race Day. I must apologise to Phil and Cam as I completely forgot to give this a plug in the weekly e-mail on Friday. Yet again, this was a tremendous advert for the Club with a large turnout of competitors from all over. An enormous thank you to everyone who helped to organise and run this event. I drove the “broomwagon” in the Vets. race in the morning before a quick bite to eat and marshalling duties in the B.C. race in the afternoon.

I know I’ve mentioned this on a number of occasions previously, and I’m no racer - just a 10 o-clock on a Saturday punter with a Dork disc (I had to Google that Dr. Dave!), but volunteering at these events really is a rewarding way to give something back to the Club. The competitors are always fully appreciative of our efforts and it’s really nice to hear their positive comments afterwards.

Rob's Dent challenge was indeed quite a ride, including a couple new-to-me roads and dales that were very photo-worthy:

Rolling over the top of Deepdale we all slammed on the brakes to stop and take in the view of Dentdale as the sun finally lit up the valleys and dried out the roads:

Given Rob's tendency to choose the road less traveled, he has us well-trained to cary all manner of tire-repair paraphernalia. All the tire boots came in handy yesterday:

First ever Vets race for me on Sunday then lead car for the BC race in the afternoon. Bit of rain to start with and a blowing wind made it feel cool but it soon dried out and warmed up. Jamie Sharp won after he dragged another 2 poor souls clear after a few miles and we never saw them again. I bet that was hard work (he then did the afternoon race...). All the Clifton guys were active but I sensed after an hour that it was going to be best to wait till everyone was a little more tired. After John Savage had tried on the crosswind section it was a hard chase and when it eased I thought the next guy to go stands a chance, so I went. A guy got across and we worked hard to maintain a gap, benefiting I suspect from tired legs in the group behind and them not wanting to do too much work with 5 miles to go. I had to ease off on the drag into and out of Sheriff Hutton to wait for my companion so I was confident of dropping the guy before the finish but thought 2 were better than one for another few miles. On the rise to the finish we couldn't see the bunch anymore so I eased away to be next across the line after the race long break. Turns out Jamie must've beaten one of his breakaway companions into submission and they'd climbed off/died because I thought I was going for 4th but turns it it was 3rd. :D john won his age category also I think but unlike me he kept his winnings as my 4 year old went up to shake Phils hand and I haven't seen the envelope since.

Watching the BC race from the rear view mirror and listening to race radio, was very pleased I didn't do that one. A few crashes and a fair bit quicker. Sometimes it's good to be old.

Enjoyed (both!!) buffets and thanks to all for helping out, see you next year.

Four regulars for the 08:45: Gerard, Simon, Doug and self. We set off for Benningborough at a brisk pace and my injured ribs finally gave in as we approached Aldwark with the tempo cranking up to warp speed. After a quick regroup we carried on out to Easingwold, Crayke, Hovingham, Slingsby and back via Castle Howard Drive.

Beautiful conditions and, as others have noted, a welcome change from the last few weeks. 60 flatish miles got us back to York for just gone 12:00 as advertised. For Simon, this was just the filling to his 200 mile epic having racked up an 80 mile ride to the coast and back before joining us at the square and following it up with a further loop to take him over the double century mark - well done.

Fingers crossed for the heat wave to carry on into next weekend.

Did the A ride as detailed above. Great ride, thanks for the route Dr Dave.

On Sunday I drove a lead car in the Clifton LVRC race, great event organised by Phil B. Great food, thanks Cath and all.

Last Wednesday I did the Malton Wheelers TT as I was organising ours on the Thursday. Friendly club that made me very welcome, thanks Matt and the others.

Cheers

Sundays road races for me. Lead car in the vets race so basically just spent a morning watching Jamie Sharp for two and a half hours in my mirrors. After he had despatched his breakaway companions with three and two laps to go it was just the two of us - nobody else in site! It was a top ride on a difficult day and the speed never seemed to drop below 25 mph. Just as well really as I had to dash back to ride the afternoon BC race. Clearly this was a tight schedule as I had about 50 mins to get something to eat, signed on, get changed and have something of a warm up. Seemed a bit chilly so I made a bad wardrobe choice which I thought was a winner when it started raining on the startline but it stopped within a couple of minutes and I was bloody boiling within a couple of miles of the start. I really, really needed a quiet opening lap and felt ok until being caught behind a bad crash at Stillington bridge on the opening lap. Actually very fortunate not to get caught up in it or at least have someone run into the back of me but like three quarters of the field it was effectively race over for me. However I did manage to get back up to the second group but I was breathing through my ar#e for the rest of the opening lap. On the way out of Sheriff it then occurred to me that my afternoon might be better spent buttering scones and this proved correct having done a u turn in the road and I even advanced to malt loaf! Well done to all who did see the finish in both races on a tough day and to everyone involved in the organisation. These are always top events.

I thought I would throw in mine & Suzie's Sunday ride for amusement. We had spent the week in the Dales, using Hawes as our base for the camper van and taking in some lumpy rides on the tandem including Buttertubs, Grinton Moor, Halton Gill via Stainforth, Kidstones and a few others on rides during the week. We 'tapered down', by taking a day off on the Saturday before taking part in the Ripon Revolution sportive on Sunday. Sportives are not my cup of tea now but it looked a good challenging circuit and, as we were doing it on the tandem, a good early indicator as to whether or not next years Fred Whitton is a realistic option on the tandem.

There were three rides on the day, a short 30m route, a 70m, standard course and the 100m epic route. We had entered the Epic which set off from Ripon, Masham, the long slog past the resevoir up to the top of Lofthouse bank, down past Gouthwaite to Pateley then up Greenhow Hill before meandering its way up hill and down dale to Brimham rocks, over to Aldwark Bridge, Helperby and back to Ripon.

We got cracking at 07.45 in a gaggle of riders who were quickly despatched once we got into our rythmn. The weather was muggy and calm but you could see the storm brewing in the west which sure enough made it's prescence know up past Fearby towards Lofthouse top. Surprisingly we found ourselves still managing to overtake riders going up hill. it should not happen, the tandem is a real slug uphill but then again the riders were the pro team jersey Pirelli dogma types. All the gear but noot much idea. By the time we had winched up to the top the weather was absolutely foul, horizontal driving rain in a bitter wind. After a quick stop to don rain capes we minced our way down Lofthouse bank which was very greasy and gravelly. The first feed station was at Pateley where the route split, standard going left into Pately and the Epic going right up Greenhow Hill. Quite a number of the Epic riders were bailing here, opting for the quicker route home. We however felt good so we hauled up Greenhow switching between our 28/34 clicking up to the 32 & 30 when the gradient slacked slightly.

Once at the top of Greenhow we knew we had done the worst of the climbs and what remained were just some lumpy up and down dale. There was one wonderful deadstraight downhill where the Garmin indicated 51mph and where we smoked quite a few solo's. We managed to carry the speed well keeping in the big 52 ring on the way back up the other side. This is where the tandem comes into it's own, very fast on the flat and down hill, but, a slug uphill!

The weather then began to improve rapidly and the rest of the ride was fairly uneventful and although starting to feel the fatigue most enjoyable.

We crossed the finishing line in an official total elasped time of 7hrs 39mins including stops, of which there were three plus one for change of clothing. Actual ride time was 6hrs 47mins showing an average speed of 14.4mph with 6,600ft of climb in the 100 miles. Fastest speed recorded 51mph.

As a bench mark for where we are aiming to be for 'The Fred', quite pleased. As for the event. it was one of the Cycling weekly sportive series, highly commercialised, very expensive, definately not good value for money though judging by the numbers of participants obviously popular. We were one of only two tandems taking part though we did not see them at all.

We were of course wearing our Clifton jerseys, with pride! :D :D

kind regards David

Sunday we has a great ride to Dent. I asked Rob last year if a Challenge ride to Dent was going to be too far and for a while in the morning the the outcome could have gone either way. Rob did some fantastic navigating maybe only looked at the map twice in the 165 miles. Knowing your area well is something we all aspire to. We traveled some of the best roads I have ever cycled on fantastic!
It was the last Clifton ride for Eric and his longest day ride to date. Somehow I think that record will be broken.
Good luck to both you and Alison its been a pleasure cycling with you both over the past 18 months.

Well done to the cost to cost day trippers and others who enjoyed a big ride this weekend. Good to know others in the club enjoy a big day out. Come and join us on some of these challenge rides it seems your well capable and we could have done with the extra company on the last few. Free entry you know. We could charge if it would make you feel better.
