A loop around Nidderdale for me with an old friend. Fewston, Kirkby Malzeard, Masham, Jordan's, Pateley (lunch at the Tea Cup cafe). Then Greenhow, Appletreewick, Cavendish Pavilion (chilled Coke), Askwith, Timble. 70 miles with 6500ft climbing so a decent day out with excellent company.
Incidentally I don't know what other 'Inters' riders are planning for next Saturday but if the forecast is reasonable I'm thinking of trying the Glaisdale ride again. Hoping that this doesn't mean wind and rain this time.....
I chose to do the Richmond 5 dales sportive on Saturday. I rode with 3 colleagues from work as part of our training for the coast to coast in a day in June. I think I was the only Cliftonite entered this year, I guess because it clashed with the Pock pedal which is always a good event.
I can really recommend the Richmond Sportive, especially if you are lucky enough to get the ideal weather that we had, cool in the morning and warm and sunny in the afternoon with a light wind that was never too bothersome as a headwind but just strong enough to give us a push home on the last leg.
The ride took in some of the best climbs and descents in the dales, just over 11000 ft of climbing in 118 miles. Our little group rode well together on the (limited) flat sections, breaking up a bit on the steeper climbs then regrouping at the top. Always better to have a group that sticks together on a ride like this.
I had a bit of a low point after 60 miles having scoffed too many Jaffa cakes at the Hawes feed station which were sitting a bit heavy on the steep section of Fleet Moss. Perked up after that on the fantastic descent through Langstrothdale and felt surprisingly ok for the rest of the ride.
It is 12 miles from the top of Grinton Moor to the finishing post in Richmond and we must have paced ourselves well in the earlier part of the ride because we covered this in around 35 minutes, flashing past a few groups of riders with more tired legs.An exhilarating way to finish a great ride.
I had a bit of an adventure on my cross bike this Sunday as a change from the big miles of recent weeks.
Not sure what you would call it not Mountain Biking not road cycling maybe Bridlewaying.
North of Ambleforth I took a forest road though the woods that put me out on Hag lane at Sproxton.
Road down to Hemsley out of the town via Blaxtons Rig Right at the top on a forest road though Cow House Bank Wood. Left on the Cockayne loop took a right on a Bridleway that was a Moor land track which tuned into a forest track after several miles up Rollergate Bank down Beadlam Rig. I am not making this up honest.
Though Pockley the thatched cottage capital of Yorkshire. Across A170 Down Rape lane to Harome.
Right in the village onto Hall lane and antoher Bridleway that takes you along the river Rye over a foot bridge the ford looked a bit deep. Which spits you out at the top end of Nunnington. I took a Bridleway before Oswaldkirk which is part of the Ebor Way. Used the old railway line between Coxwold and Husthwiate another Bridleway before Carlton Husthwaite.
I got close to 60 miles done most of it on tracks or bits of tarmac that have been forgot about. A different kind of Sunday for me.
Another reason for posting is to do a bit of Publicity for the Challenge Rides. If Neil and Dr Dave like the 5 Dales Sportive then they should give the Dent ride on June 28th a go. Those who went the distance on the Pock Peddle should enjoy themselves on the Spurn Head ride on June 14th .
Fantastic 08:45 ride on Saturday. Four takers - Jez and Simon T as well as two newbies...John and Doug. Route as prescribed - 68 undulating miles through the Wolds. Really strong riding by all meant that the average was at the upper end of my estimation - 19 mph.
John & Doug - I got the feeling on the ride that you enjoyed yourselves. I very much hope that you are able to join us again in the future.
Thanks also to all those who have been on the 08:45 ride of late. There have been some really good rides over the last month or so. Last weeks ride over Fountains Abbey and Ripon was perhaps one of the best we have done - and the average speed certainly wasn't shabby!
Unfortunately I won't be out next week...but either myself or Mike will ensure that a route is posted up in advance.
