Weekend Roundup

Post by Rob »

Just me and Andy for the Sunday Clubrun. Numbers limited by The Scotton, the Dalby Adventure-Cross and a hysterical weather forecast. Indeed it started to rain within 10 mins of leaving the Square and continued until 10 mins from home. The 50 mph winds though never materialised. We switched routes to Pateley and passed the Scotton gang up near Brimham. Lots of grinning/grimacing going on. Looked like a blast.

Return route via Yorks Folley where we were pressure washed as we topped the climb. Then on with the cross-tailwind all the way home.

As 5 hours in the rain go, that was an exceedingly good ride!

Hopefully better conditions next Sunday, Filey anyone?

If you're only going to have two riders on a club run though - you two are the best of the best.

Phew what a damned fine excellent weekend it was for me , it started early for me - Thursday afternoon. I've been going to Sheffield once a fortnight for three years for work, why have I never thought of slinging the bike in the car. It was a lovely day, so after work I drove up Ringinglow Road (it is a real place - honest), parked the car and off I went. Believe it or not I've never been to the Peak district because surely Derbyshire couldn't have anything Yorkshire couldn't do better, but wow on a lovely day it was superb, proper mountains - up through Winnat's pass, over Mam Tor, down through Edale valley, Lady Bower reservoir, Strines moor (who could believe such a remote place is wedged between two of the North's greatest cities) High Bradfield and onto the TDF route - Va Va Froome and Where's Wiggo still written on the road. Past High Bradfield brewery (I've sunk a few pints of theirs) and back to the car - it was difficult not to get carried away and keep cycling.

Friday the missis was taking the kids to see the Yogscast Krew playing Minecraft (l don't know what any of that means either) at Birmingham exhibition centre, so with a good weather forecast I took the day off and went to Dalby. I've been blatting round the red run for a couple of years but I've started to feel I was treading water. I've got to admit I was scared of the black but it was time to give it a go. I rode the red in the morning, a stop for lunch and then it was time for the black, I took my time stopping, to plan routes on the more technical bits, but it was all fine so I did the circuit twice: other than; (for those that know it) after Worry Gill there's a rocky gorge, and at the bottom a sharp berm right and then a steep ramp onto a long climb. Buggered if I could keep enough momentum up the ramp to stay on the bike and then it was tricky to get started again to get up the rest of the climb. Still a pat on the back for me - when I started MTBing about five years ago anything the least bit technical was too much for me whereas now I'm cool riding the black run in Dalby.

Sunday was the Moors and Shores ride - despite the weather I really really enjoyed it. It was best suited to cross but like me, probably more than half I did it on MTB. It was interesting observing the merits of both types of machine. On the hard packed trails and road sections the cross bikes had the MTBs nailed but as the rain got heavier and the mud got thicker whilst I'm sure there would have been no issues for Marianne Vos, most cross riders were slip sliding all over the place whereas on the MTB you could just plug on through. And I did like having some MTB twiddly gears - there were some stiff climbs towards the end and as people were getting tired more and more were walking. It was nice to be able to stay on the bike and keep twiddling on when so many couldn't. Heck, out of character for me I was really enjoying the climbs, by the end, I wanted more.

Hat's off to the scouts bike washing for a couple of quid at the finish - if mine was any thing to go by.....

What a great weekend of cycling.

Did Ravensthorpe 10 tt on Saturday which was fairly challenging out with side and head winds but very fast coming back. Must have been tricky for the 2 ups.

Scotton on Sunday which was a challenge in different ways with the rain and slippery conditions, enjoyed both though. Many thanks to Dave I'Anson and his team for a superbly organised event and great food at the end. We maybe take it for granted but to organise an event like this with getting land owners permission etc is a big job.

Just a reminder that there is a link to a spreadsheet in the spoco evening tt events section where you can put your name down for helping out, marshalling, timekeeping etc.

Cheers Dave

Broom Wagon you asked the question a few months ago, has cycling lost something ? Well It sounds like its lost a miserable Broom Wagon and gained one in much better form.

I had another bash at the Scotton 100. Managed to get around with no bike issues or this time direction issues. Things were going very well until the wind smacked me in the face at around Fawdingworth. I lost the wheel of the group I was with after a fall on the mud. So no record time this year. I did about 5 miles less this time with getting the directions right and took an extra 10 minutes to do it. The conditions took a big toll.

Thanks to all those involved in putting this event on timers, signs, water stop, food and very important anyone who stayed around to clean up the mess we all made in the hall

Thank you all very much

Scotton for me. There are further accounts in the racing and training section but I'll put my piece here as is not a race (haha!) Just about the hardest thing I've done on a bike a bit like riding a 100mile time trial off road in pouring rain and a howling gale. I think its knocked about 2 years off the end of my life - just not sure which end yet! It was just one of those days for me and I was really just glad to see the finish, not fall off or suffer any mechanicals or punctures - really not a day to be standing at the roadside. Also really glad I'd squeezed cross tyres onto my training bike this time out. As already mentioned big thanks to Dave and everyone who helped in the running of this - nothing compares to it and I'm sure a few quid was raised for Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
Hopefully everyone out on the road in this event respected the law and other road users. I for one waited patiently at the lights in Ripon all alone in the pouring rain for at least 2 minutes. Shame this wasnt the case in Paris Roubaix which was actually quite a sad day for the integrity of cycle sport.
