Weekend Round-up Oct 19/20

Post by Dr Dave »

The 8.45 ride this week was a very social affair and was a hybridisation of social and training ride regulars. Approx 15 riders left the square on a gloomy damp morning ably guided by Tony G on a fractal route taking in many of the small lanes around Hovingham. An informal structure allowed plenty of chatting en-route whilst a few strong riders ensured the pace was taxing enough. The roads were pretty muddy resulting in some face packs by halfway. Most riders had mudguards although a few have still to get them installed. I'm sure they will be getting this done before next week ;-)

By the time we were heading for home via Alne, Tollerton etc my quads were starting to cramp so I sat in, grateful for the tow into town after 70 hilly miles at 18 mph.
Great ride, thanks to all. Now I just need to clean the bike!

12 out on the A ride to Otley on Saturday. Karl, Dave W, Stu, Finlay, Jenny, Sue, Graham, Kevin, Matt, John B, Steen and myself. Damp, cool, merky start to the day but feeling deceptively warm. Many were probably overdressed including me. Out through tockwith, spofforth, fewston and back through leathley, Weeton, Wetherby, some very mucky roads so mudguards are now a must I think even though it dried up abit in the afternoon :). Long cafe stop due to a couple of orders being forgotten about despite us being the only ones there really. Thankfully it wasn't busy  certainly a ride that felt harder than it should have being. We seemed to lose Dave W on the run in back to York without realising until Askam Bryan. Stu, Fin, and John stopped to wait as the rest of the group disappeared into the distance. Hope you got back ok Dave. A good route and about the right distance for the time of year for me at least. Still 105 miles door to door at 16.3 av so not too shabby on a heavy bike

Great Sunday ride today. Select group of RichardD, Cooky, TonyG and self. Out via Coxwold, Bagby, Skipton on Swale and Snape to Thorpe Perrow. Brief refuel, then back via Grewelthorpe, BishopMonkton and Aldwark. The forecast rain held off all day and conditions were warm enough for short sleeves.

Back in York at 3-30, pretty stuffed to be honest, 88 miles Square to Square. Thanks for the company.

My agents tell me GillC and NickS were spotted running the York Marathon and I would guess there were other Cliftonites.... Would love to hear a report here!

I did the 8.45 on Saturday as reported by Dr Dave. A good ride with a great Tony G route. Going up the climb to Scackleton we were joined by a black sheep racing us all the way up to the village, hope it got back down to his field ok!

Sunday was Robs' club ride which took another great route as described by Rob. Hope you had a good ride Tim, saw him going the other way over Aldwark bridge.

Most guys had mudguards on but for full effectiveness a mudflap is a good idea also, easy to make aswell.

Cheers Dave

Cross double header for me this weekend. Rode the Rapha Supercross event at Skipton on Saturday and Round 6 of the Yorkshire points series on Sunday.

Rapha event was good fun, with continental feel helped by Belgian waffles, frites and a beer tent open from 10.30am! Tough heavy course not helped by the overnight rain. Poor start again, not helped by a narrow start and got held up a little on the first lap. After that I was playing catch up, but managed to get into a reasonable position by mid-race and then just tried to hold on. Had a couple of riders in my sight and managed to claw my way up to them on the last lap only to slip and suddenly they'd made back 20 yards. Finished 25th which was okay.

Sunday was a good little course up at Huddersfield. Despite the threat of rain it didn't materialise ( unlike last week) and the sun actually shone for part of the race! Despite the rain overnight, the course was pretty dry and fast but with 4 run-ups each lap the fatigue started to accumulate towards the end. A much better start put me on Andy Windrum's wheel for most of the 1st lap, but a slip on a tricky off-camber section put me on the ground again and Andy was off. Finished 21st which I was pretty pleased with, but needed to pick up the pace a little more on laps 2 and 3. I also need to work on my cornering as I'm losing time here, but I' m getting better! Andy had a cracking ride with a 7th place and Wayne picked up a podium position in the over 50s. So a good showing for Cycleworks.

No other senior riders for Clifton however, which was a shame after a good showing a couple of weeks ago.

Sheffield next week. If you've ever fancied cross, have a go its great fun.

Might see some of you next Sunday

On Saturday, I did the last NYMBO event of the season, a 4 hour 40 mile slog on the moors and trails around Masham. It had been wet in the lead up which turned the going into one for the mudlarks. By the end of a murky day, we were caked head to toe in mud. I had high hopes and started fast, but a farmer decided to cut his hedges on a boggy bridleway which claimed a number of victims, including me. It blew up both my tyres at once, as well as my day! Nothing better than fighting tyre levers while up to your eyeballs in mud and watching your fellow competitors pass by on their merry way collecting points. I went ballistic when I finally rejoined the event and recovered a reasonable score in a short period of time but the real players had long gone. Despite the mud and punctures, I enjoyed the day and was glad to finish it off well. I’m still learning this caper but have to say I really enjoy it. It combines serious fitness with smart thinking and a good amount of competitiveness. The big guns know how to monster courses and I’ll need to step up in fitness and tools to improve further. I do love it though and am already looking forward to taking it up a notch next year. In the meantime however, it’s back to the serious business of wintering well in the social cafes.
