weekend round up 14/15th
With only one race left spent my Sat aft i spent the company of DC.Decided to do the cockeyne route anti clockwise. We met outside Sheriff and made decent progress to Fadmoor .The headwind all the way to the turn round across the moors meant a good workout was in store.A classic ride and the weather shone and with the wind at our backside decent off the tops and into Helmsley were pretty fast and exciting with the added sheep keeping us on our toes the return leg Soon saw us in sutton on Forest with both going our own way.Don't know how far but 4 1/4 hours on one of my top routes.cheers .
The MTBers were off on our annual 2 day Tour. Sort of equivalent to the roadies Easy Riders i.e. 40-45 miles per day with some refreshment along the way - but that's where the similarity ends.
This year we took to the North Pennines starting at Barnard Castle on Friday evening then doing a meandering route around the Moors then North through Teesdale finishing in Weardale for the night in an Outdoor Centre/Bunkhouse. The weather was tremendous with some amazing views all around but the riding was very 'challenging' at times - those trails aren't used much and non-existent in places.
Sunday the forecasted storm came and we abandoned all ideas of any off-roading deciding it would be enough of a challenge getting back to the cars at all heading directly into the gale force winds and rain with some high ground to cover. One ominous road sign at the start of a climb summed it up really (see the sunny version below) but we all made it back to the cars in 1 piece albeit thoroughly 'exfoliated' by the driving rain.

Another A ride for me along with I think 9 or 10 other?. I say think because I thought we started with Karl but when ingot chance to look around he wasn't with us. Headed for Pateley bridge via tockwith, cowthorpe, spofforth, pannal beckwithshaw, fewston etc. I did have aroute in the garmin which was similar but Richard D chose to alternate it a bit which meant a few new roads around blubberhouse and thurcross before rejoining the route at duck st and up the drag to green how where we bumped into Karl. Standard route back through marking ton and over Aldwark bridge. A decent day with plenty of climbing which tested the legs abit but good company and another long day. 115 miles door to door. Good to make the most of better weather of the weekend. Hope to be out next week.

8.45 ride for me. A few new ( to me) faces and strong legs meant a keen pace out via Crayke to Kilburn and round to Wass bank. Up this then back to Ampleforth and home via Brandsby and Flaxton. A few riders riding slightly erratically in the bunch made things 'interesting' a couple if times but we made it round without serious incident, 57 miles at 18.8 for me....
Some notable rides recently:
It has been briefly mentioned, but Kiwi Matt of the Intermediates rides completed a full Ironman triathlon last month- swimming for an hour, then cycling 112 miles (a 2-3 point challenge ride in itself)… and then running a marathon. 12 hours of exertion. Still awesome.
Paul S finished the annual Isle of Man Cross-Country MTB event in 51st position out of 1,700 keen MTB’ers (hundreds of them were seriously keen because they even jumped onto a ferry from mainland Britain to race the event!). Top 4% of riders. Seeded in the top 100 starters next year.
And Dave W (broke his elbow in Spring) and John B (one of Kevin S’s fledglings (like many of us) from last winter, now turning a very tidy pedal) completed the ‘King of the Pennines’ sportive, involving 3,300 metres of climbing to put it on par with Fred Whitton and Etape du Dales.
Great stuff.
