Weekend Roundup 3rd & 4th August

Post by Darren N »

Back on 2nd March this year on an Inters ride to Driffield, Dave Ward hit a rock and smashed his elbow in 3 places. We repeated the ride to Driffield today and an ‘almost repaired’ Dave joined us for his self-titled Dave Ward Memorial Ride. Unfortunately Dave’s curse played havoc with us on the way out.

13 in the Square on a sunny morning for another grand Inters trip to Driffield. On the way out, Andrew hit the deck when a car almost wiped out our entire group, Dr Joe’s tyre was shredded in the incident, forcing him to limp to Driffield for another. Then Dr Dave punctured. Kevin II & Simon led us up the bank at North Grimston but we somehow lost Mark, spent ages looking for him, decided to leave without him, then found him again, and then another rider turned off for home. On the hill above West Lutton, we somehow were spread out like Brown’s cows over half a mile and had averaged what felt like a sad 5 mph to that point, …with a tail wind! It had been somewhat comical, – I’m blaming Dave.

In the valley between Cowlam and Driffield, we decided to unload our pent up energy and blasted all the way to the Driffield sign. I found myself dangling out the front doing the lead out duties, but the sprinters were so busy watching each other, the sign was on us in no time, so they collectively thought ‘what the heck’ and let me take it. It was great to sit outside in the sun at Driffield.

The trip back into a headwind wasn’t easy but at least we stayed in tidy formation with some solid contributions made by many on the front. Sticking with the theme to unload the petrol tanks, we cranked it up again with John C leading us through the valley at Millington pastures, made harder by the hill at the end. Later, Dr Dave went on a ‘long one’ to take the win into Stamford Bridge.

Weather was kind to us all day, despite the nagging headwind on the way back. In terms of celebrity spotting, we saw Clare on the way out and Julia on the way back. Thankfully, the ride got better as the day went on, let’s hope the curse of Dave Ward is now behind us! Thanks to everyone for a great day – see you next week!

Had my annual Saturday ride. Seemed a nervous peloton.... Thought there was some 'interesting' riding personally, but these things happen eh?! Was a slog home alone in that headwind alone! Hopefully out again in the near future
Cheers

Ian Halett and I completed the London to Edinburgh to London this week.

I know of two other York riders Richard Twigg another club member who I don't know and Keith Benton. Who I know as the organizer of the Wiggington 300, but I suspect has form going back in the York Cycling world. I went to see a bike he was selling about 7 years ago.

LEL is a 890 mile ride by my computer from London to Edinburgh and back and has to be completed in 116 hours Ian and I did it in 108 or 4 1/2 days.
Giving us time for a shower and a few pints at the end.
First day Sunday was London to Thirsk my house. Second Monday Thirsk to Edinburgh. Third Tuesday Edinburgh to Barnard Castle Forth Wednesday Barnard Castle to Kirton south of Boston in Lincolnshire. Half ( sounds better if we don't say fifth) Kirton to Loughton South of Epping -North London and also the start.
We had tailwinds Headwinds Sidewinds Rain temps where you needed a couple of layers and armwarmers and on Thursday about 35c.
The event had about 1000 starters with 20% bailing out. I understand we finished in the top half but for us it was about finishing with a smile on on our faces. The organizatinon of the event was brilliant you could get some sleep at each control. Eat as much as you wanted we were on about 6 meals a day plus pocket food I lost 1 lbs over the whole time. So I am a greedy sod (had to change that last word never know who might be reading this) or a lazy one.
Said to be people from 32 different countries taking part on all sorts of bikes some crap some bonkers but mostly road bikes like ours.
Met talked and rode with some great people some funny as hell others strange as .. We cycled over fantastic parts of the country and i suspect the guys from overseas were impressed with the organization and beautiful contrasting country if not the state of the roads.
Each day we started around 7am and finished either side of midnight. Eating then getting our heads down. At some points we were Laughing until we were almost crying as you come out with some total rubbish when your exhausted high on sugar and caffeine. We never had a low period but plenty when you had to push yourself on to make progress.
18 months of k rides 18 months of Sunday Club runs with the odd Challenge ride some very odd. Plus doing a bit extra over the past 6 months made this ride and the recovery better than I could have imagined.
Anyway as you can guess I had a good time however if you want to do something longer distance my advice would be do it with a friend or two as I suspect some had a different experience. I am not sure yet if I would do this one again but know I will do something like it abroad.

Excellent stuff! You were still in good humour when you passed through Pocklington on the way south, which is quite some achievement that far through the ride! Oh and yes, Keith has form: he used to be the chair of Audax UK

Since you mention the bonkers bikes, how about this? Zipp 404/808 wheels, mudguards and a dynamo hub!

Yes well done guys. A bit bonkers on distance and cycling at ungodly hours but still an excellent achievement. Also for Greg and his 24 hr ride.

As for me no cycling news to report as I have not been on a bike for nearly 4 weeks. Been away on a non cycling holiday and have also been house sitting my brothers house for 2 weeks while they've been away. Have spent my time looking after the many animals they have. Such fun, not

The one positive thing about not cycling for a while is that you miss it more and want to get back on the bike. There was talk about motivation on another thread but I think you need to spend some time off the bike either voluntarily or enforced to get the enthusiasm back.

Hope to be back out soon and start getting the miles in again.

I was in London this weekend for the LondonSurrey100. I'm not the biggest fan of Sportives but do them to raise money for Action Medical Research. This ride however could well become legendary very soon. Get yourself booked onto it for 2014. The organisation was magnificent. You really need to experience it to see how good it is. The people of London and Surrey put us northerners to shame too. There were thousands on the streets really encouraging every rider.
The route was completely on closed roads and was so fast. I did the 100 in 5 hrs 26 mins I could have done it in under 5 if I hadn't got cramp after 30 miles. A friend of mine did it in 4hours 30mins. The first man over the line (an Italian) did it in just over 4 hours.
The organisation was so good that with 16,000 riders they managed to not have too much bunching. There was nothing more than a busy Saturday ride. Remarkable.
Before the event I thought it was a lot of bother to go to London to ride 100 miles. Having run the London Marathon and then ridden the LondonSurrey100 I can see this ride being bigger than the marathon. I'll be doing it next year and I would imagine most of the other 16,000 riders will be doing the same. Nothing but sheer cycling fun from the beginning of the day until the end.

Congrats to Ian and Steen on London Edinburgh London. I got around in 111 hours, just inside the 116 hours limit. Spent a bit of time with Keith Benton who seemed to be riding as strongly as anyone. It was an Amazing event. Big thankyou to G for giving me a warm welcome at Pock control on the home leg. I don't even know him but he greeted me with a big smile as I handed over my Brevet card and asked "how's the GPS?" (he had given me some advice via this discussion board a few months before). The volunteers made this event truly special.

1st of all.a big well done to the LEL riders.I saw them morning and night on a few days on my way to and from work.in rain and wind.so hats off to you all. 2nd'ly.I only saw the London Surrey on tv.but what a spectacle it must have been with spectators lining the streets.a must do for 2014 I think.
For me.8.45 brisk group on Saturday.met up at upper helmsley and boy.what a pace.when I saw a face from the road race scene(Dan) and a Thursday spoco face(Shaun).I thort s#!t.what have I let myself in for.but.no need to worry.such a tidy formation trundling away nicely.man of the day had to be Dan.watching him dance his way up out of birdsall while I fed on my bar tape.best 8.45 ride to date in my opinion. :)
