13 in the Square on a sunny morning for another grand Inters trip to Driffield. On the way out, Andrew hit the deck when a car almost wiped out our entire group, Dr Joe’s tyre was shredded in the incident, forcing him to limp to Driffield for another. Then Dr Dave punctured. Kevin II & Simon led us up the bank at North Grimston but we somehow lost Mark, spent ages looking for him, decided to leave without him, then found him again, and then another rider turned off for home. On the hill above West Lutton, we somehow were spread out like Brown’s cows over half a mile and had averaged what felt like a sad 5 mph to that point, …with a tail wind!

In the valley between Cowlam and Driffield, we decided to unload our pent up energy and blasted all the way to the Driffield sign. I found myself dangling out the front doing the lead out duties, but the sprinters were so busy watching each other, the sign was on us in no time, so they collectively thought ‘what the heck’ and let me take it. It was great to sit outside in the sun at Driffield.
The trip back into a headwind wasn’t easy but at least we stayed in tidy formation with some solid contributions made by many on the front. Sticking with the theme to unload the petrol tanks, we cranked it up again with John C leading us through the valley at Millington pastures, made harder by the hill at the end. Later, Dr Dave went on a ‘long one’ to take the win into Stamford Bridge.
Weather was kind to us all day, despite the nagging headwind on the way back. In terms of celebrity spotting, we saw Clare on the way out and Julia on the way back. Thankfully, the ride got better as the day went on, let’s hope the curse of Dave Ward is now behind us! Thanks to everyone for a great day – see you next week!
