The route from Ampleforth to Oswaldkirk might be a possible variation to either take the left turn for a nice climb and descent on quieter roads or the bumpy direct route. Other than that it's pretty straightforward.
Can someone please note that this is not a Training ride. Phil posts details of that under the racing thread. Also the training ride leaves at 9am. I myself was put off going on this because of the ill discipline of group riding and the speed. The ride two weeks ago was in efficient, way too fast one minute and then when everybody broke up everybody stops instead of just slowing down.
No, this is not a 'training' ride, it's a 'social' ride.
As the 'our rides' section of the website states it is a "Non-stop, brisk Social ride. Suitable for experienced riders who are comfortable riding at speed in a group."
To allow for a degree of mixed abilities, the group does wait at times to allow people to catch-up and recover.

Thanks for that Steve
Ive been on enough club rides to consider myself experienced but my concern about this ride was that the pace is inefficient. my stats from 2 weeks ago stated av. of 17 for 52 miles which is pretty much 3hrs riding. however i finished with you i think, Karl and Allan in a group about 20 mins after everybody else so there speed must have been faster. i dont want to seenm like im splitting hairs here but i think 17mph av is where this ride should be at. most would feel comfortable at that. I just dont think that riding at 20+mph one miniute then stopping to regroup is effcient riding. Robs clubrun regulars have known this for ages having attended these rides also.
It filled a need for a non-stop, brisk ride that was back for midday. It was always understood that riders who wanted to stretch their legs could have a go at some hills but the ride would re-group and not drop people. This is what happens and I think Steve, Reuben and others have done a great job with it. It had a slow start but now has a regular attendance of around 18 regulars, that's 5% of the Club, so I'd say it filled a gap in the market.
Now there seems to be a pattern of people turning up, not liking the format and taking a pop on here. It's not gone unnoticed that the same people are nowhere to be seen when volunteers are needed to help out
To be fair Paul Jon does have a point. Carol first agitated for this ride and then some others picked the idea up and made it happen. Right from the beginning there were two thought streams - a training type ride but slower than the training ride and a half day social ride.
I've only joined this ride once -average speed 18mph. Seemed to me that most folk out that day were happy with the ride but it does resemble a training ride more than a social ride IMO.
