New to York and looking to ride/get fit

Post by Jayster »

Hello everyone,

I've just moved to York and although I've been riding on and off for the past 8 years, I've 'fallen off the bike' so to speak over the past 12 months due to graduating, getting married, and relocating twice. However, we are now looking to put down roots in York and therefore I'm looking to join a group to ride with/build up my strength. I've ridden 100 mile days before, and taken my bike to Europe and the US, but as my age has increased my strength/fitness has gone in the other direction. So, couple of questions:

1. Is the 'k' group OK for me to ride with as 50 miles may be a challenge for me right now meaning I will almost certainly hold the group up?

2. Are there any good links to 'ride guides' so I can go out and build my strength up without the local knowledge of the surrounding areas: sadly I only have the Garmin 205 and until I can upgrade it means I have to download maps etc, which is far from ideal.

Any help/feedback would be much appreciated.

Many thanks.

Hi.I'm only a newcomer to the club but 1 ride I would strongly recommend is the Saturday 8.45 ride.round about 50 miles.reasonable pace.regroup after the climbs and everyone looks after everyone.hope this helps.

Hi Jason

Welcome to York! Paul's suggestion of the Saturday 8:45 ride is probably sensible. The K Ride is a café-stop ride though, so you're doing it in two halves, which makes it easier (and it often splits to allow different distances for different abilities). Plough through a few threads on here and you'll quickly get a feel for what all the rides are like. See you out on the training rides next year...

I can't point you at any ride guides (although I think they're out there) but I'd suggest (i) the club has a social coming up on 14th June - come along and chat people up for information, and (ii) there are a number of races, evening TT's etc which need help/marshals - stick your hand up to help and you'll soon start to make contacts within the club, and people will feed you useful info.

Enjoy!

Bit of a long shot ..

Post by Jayster »

Seeing as it's early, but can anyone confirm if the 8.45 'K' ride is actually at 8.45 as the website appears to say 10am? Probably me being a doofus and not reading it right but don't really want to rock up and then have to head home ....

As I say though, long shot as I'll have to leave in 25 minutes or so ...

Cheers, peeps.

The 8:45am and K rides are different rides. You are correct the K ride does leave the square at 10 am.

For someone that is lacking strength and fitness, and may find the 50 miles a struggle, which ride is more appropriate?

Many thanks for your response.

Hi guys, are any of the 0845 and 'K' riders on Strava so I could have a look at a typical ride and know what to expect before I venture out.

Hi i'm on Strava as Pete Pearson & have done some 8:45 rides. They normally average about 16-18mph depending on the route & size of the group. If you can ride 40-50 miles solo @ 16-17ish mph you should be fine :)

I can manage those speeds comfortably on the flat but not on hills like Wass Bank!! Think I'll go out with the 'k' riders first.

Hi Stewy, you'd be a perfect fit for the Saturday inter ride, if they still happen?...I'm a bit out of touch now, I think many of them do the much shorter 8:45 ride now.
The Sunday rides are proper clubruns, with interesting and much more varied routes, and much further than anything Seacroft do. Rides are typically 80/100 miles but often further, and much tighter with much less waiting around time.

You're strong enough to do any of the above, have fun.

The inters rides happen every Saturday - 10 am from Exhibition square. Generally about 90 miles at this time of year.

It does seem to be the case that a few regulars have defected to the 8:45 ride but I'm sure they'll soon get bored of the same old routes and recognise the benefits of a proper meal instead of a snack ;)

I only know one Stewy from Seacroft. He drives over from York on a Sunday, and is a good wheel for sitting behind in a headwind. I presume you're the same, but there could be another Stewy. I've done a few clubruns with you, but I'm a low profile kinda guy.
