Highway code - good news

"Following a high-profile campaign from CTC, the Government has agreed
to amend the Highway Code to improve cyclists' safety and to encourage
drivers to take more care around vulnerable road users.

In total over 40 rules have been changed to the benefit of cyclists.

The new version makes clear that cyclists have every right to cycle on
the road. Rules 61 and 63 state that cycle lanes and cycle facilities,
are "not compulsory" and the decision to use them "will depend on your
experience and skills".

Wooohooo... good ol' CTC. The letters to the MP were, for once, worth the ink they were written with (shame the same wasn't the case with the Iraq invasion, the FTR, fuel tax, school league tables, etc etc....)

Great news,

As Phil says all the efforts by CTC members e-mailing their MPs has shown just what a force cyclists can be when they stick together.

I had a look at the highway code on the internet today - rule 61 & 63 are nothing to do with cyclepaths. Is this going to be on a new version of the highway code which hasn't been brought in yet?

Yep. The CTC website has details - 61 is about off-road cycle routes and 63 is about on-road (ie white-line-defined) cycle lanes.
