Training ride, Saturday 11th

Post by PhilBixby »

With a clear diary for Sunday and a promising-looking weather forecast for Saturday I'm planning to be out for this week's training ride. Shall we head west (Bramham / Thorner / Scholes etc)?

When do these training rides start to fizzle out till next year? Looks like I'm moving back to Yorkshire on Sunday and wanting to get some fast training in still.

Won't be out, working yet again :(

Had a good ride out with the CW Chain Gang last night, although the through and off on the return leg saw me mainly sitting in the wheels due to the speed (average speed for the whole session was over 23mph!) It was just nice to get out with some company, even if I was too out of breath to speak to anyone for most of the ride!

Once the Games have finished I'll hopefully manage to get out again and regain some fitness, until then i'll be hitting the turbo some more :( :(

Have a good one, I'm v. jealous :D :D

"When do these training rides start to fizzle out till next year?"

I'm assuming since there are still races on the calendar until late September, they'll continue until then. Personally I take a month off and do the Kev rides through October but I know there were still groups out hammering themselves last year. Just depends if you see any point in hammering yourself six months before your next race (cyclocrossers excepted!). There will certainly be start-of-winter-training (ie very steady) rides out from November onwards.

We'll also aim to do a pub night at the end of the season for anyone who raced this year and/or intends to do so next year, just to share feedback and maybe talk about training needs for the upcoming season. More details in due course.

I'm intending to be out and Thorner would be my choice too.

Like the idea of a pub night. This year was a write off for me, so unless work gets silly again (and I know I say it every year) I'm hoping for a full racing season next year. Whether it will be road racing or MTB racing or considering the RR crashes this year I can't help thinking getting a TT bike is on the cards and I might do that instead - or even a combination of all three. I don't know yet.

Indeed I do - though it must be 15 years since I've done one and who knows I might like it a bit more than I did then. I'd rather do RRing anytime but I'm not half the man Toby is and an accident like that would be the end of cycling for me. Still nothing decided yet....

Incidentially I saw you on your TT bike today on the A19.

That's the first time I've heard a Wilier Izoard XP desicribed as a 'TT bike'! Admittedly, I was doing something TTish: dropping off an entry form with Pete Read for his 100.

"considering the RR crashes this year I can't help thinking getting a TT bike is on the cards"...

I've said it before but I'll say it again - vets racing. Smaller fields than BC events, lots of experienced racers and a general wish to stay in one piece and be safely behind your desk on Monday morning. Crashes still occasionally happen as you'll know from the race reports on here but they're pretty rare - I reckon I've seen more crashes in TT's over the years than in LVRC races. And definitely more on sportives. They're hard races and you certainly don't go in expecting an envelope with a fiver from every event (unless you're Darren  ) but they're a good challenge, and one of the real positives about being over 40....

Will you be heading out via Bishiopthorpe Rd/Bishopthorpe? If so, I might try and pick you up there

Blimey a blast from the past, nice to see you're still about. Yes we should be down Bishopthorpe road some time past 9am. When was the last time I rode with you.....seem to think it was you disappearing over coal road in 2007 in the Etape Du Dales for a well under 7 hour time. Everyone else seems to get faster and me slower these days, Arthur.

A good ride this morning, despite the mysterious disappearance of the early morning sunshine. Twelve starters including The Return Of Arthur, and steady progress out to Thorner where a group peeled off the back for a shorter route back. Onwards for the rest of us, with it all staying together until the pace cranked up just before Stillingfleet. Broomwagon and I executed a creditable two up chasing the next-most-recently-shed pair in front, getting back with just over 21mph average and just under 230W Normalised Power for the out-of-town bit showing on the clock. Many thanks to all.

I'll be otherwise engaged over the next few weekends - anyone fancy taking a lead with choosing routes / shepherding everyone when needed? Andy? You're good at this!

I'm not going to say what the NP I had was. Suffice to say, it was less than Phil :(

Thanks to everyone for the ride. See you again in a few weeks.
