thanks for any advice in advance and will hope to meet a few of you on rides
Hi Adrian,
If you want to do road cycling, a road bike is best. Any of the big brands will do you a decent road bike - something like the Specialized Allez, Trek 1.1 and Giant Defy. These start at about £500 these days, but the end of season sales should be coming up soon so you might get a better deal on a 2012 model if you wait a month or two. The Boardman bikes at Halfords also look quite good.
Hope that helps
Greg
Just to follow up Greg's sensible advice - if you're new to it all, there's a lot to be said for buying from a good shop which will give you support when needed, fix problems, etc. It's also essential to get a bike which is the right size, rather than being waved on your way on one they just happen to have in stock.
***EDIT*** There are a number of very good local independent cycle shops - none of them begin with "Hal"

When I said Boardman bikes looked quite good, what I really meant was "The actual Boardman bikes themselves look very nice, but you don't get the sort of care and attention from the seller that you can expect from most of the independent bike shops in York, which is really useful if this is your first road bike."
Boardman do look good G, you're right - Dr Dave's is very pretty. However seeing the mess caused by H******s selling Willhub a wrongly-sized bike has scarred me!
Thanks for the replies. i have choosen to get a Scott Speedster S30. Was looking at Fuji but had none the size i wanted. now have to wait 4 weeks (sigh) to get my certificate from cycle scheme.
