Thixendale Spirograph, 22nd April

Post by Rob »

Just marking your cards nice and early. The idea is to climb every road out of Thixendale without making a U-turn. This was a blast last year, and am looking forward to it. 90 odd miles and about 1700m of climbing. Have just pasted in what I wrote last year in the planning stage. As ever, it will be 0900 from The Square. No entry forms, just turn up.

*********************

Right, are you sitting comfortably? OS map out on the table, glass of red to hand.

The climbs out of Thixendale (going round anticlockwise):
1. Water Dale - that draggy one going W, then
2. Martinholme
3. Breckenholme
4. Gill's
5. Gritts

Then I was going to have the Burdale climb to to Fimber. But this only goes up to 130m... and if I was going to have this one then there's also the one from this road S to Fridaythorpe, which tops out at 170m. So, slight change of plan, I'm going to make it the 6 climbs out of Thix that break the 200m contour:

6. Warram Percy Wold

With me so far?
OK, on Sunday we'll ride out through Bugthorpe and up the Kirby Underdale climb. Then, we need to climb each of 1-6, so:

Down 3
Up 4
Down 5
Up 6
Down 1
Up 2
Down 4
Up 5
Down 6
Up 1
Down 2
Up 3

Including the ride in and out I reckon its about 85-90 miles, depending on how much weaving about you do, and the astute amongst you will have noticed that on top of the 6 Thix climbs, there's a fair bit of grunting to do to link them up.... In fact, given the complexity of the route, I'm sure you'll forgive me if I've miscalculated by the odd mile or 10....

Definitely intend doing this ride again. It was a good challenge last year. Not sure if there is any point trying to use last years garmin route as all the purple lines you usually follow just over lap each other  Shouldn't need it though with Rob's excellent navigation :)

Is there an option for a "half" spiro?

Do all the hills but only half of them in an upward direction :)

Was thinking could bale out after "Up 2" so
Down 3
Up 4
Down 5
Up 6
Down 1
Up 2

This is a just a clubrun around a challenging and interesting route. On a Sunday we ride together, look out for each other and, if it splits on a climb, we regroup at the top. If there're more than about 12 out I'll split things into 2 groups.

There will be showers - it's April - we have April every year - we get used to it - bring a cape/mudguards/flaps.

See you on Sunday 8)

Sorry Rob...

Will the village hall in Thixendale be open as last year serving welcome cups of tea at halftime on this ride? Will be bringing plenty of sustenance in the pockets however to keep me going. :)

Jon,
the village hall will be open as per last year, having done the route today we had to use the cafe in Fridaythorpe, so slightly altered the sequence of the climbs to accommodate this stop.
The looked after us very well, it was just the hail/sleet & rain from there to the climb out to Waterdale that was a bit sticky,

Quite a large group at the square this morning for the Thixendale spirograph, Rob split us into two groups with Shaun taking the first group which consisted of quite a number of Cycleworks guys until after the tea and cakes at Thixendale when he then joined us.

The weather was quite good early on but later got a bit wet at times however what a great ride it was with what must be a record number of P##****es 12, yes Twelve + two for the first group , the most spectacular was Rob's which blew his rim apart such a shame after leading the group round had to ring Claire for a lift home at least it was after all the climbing and was on the way home, hope you got home ok and many thanks for today.

We saw you guys just heading into Thixendale. I punctured myself about 2 miles later.

Well done for those who completed the whole route!
