Weekend Roundup

Post by Rob »

Hi folks, I did my first pass in my life! YEAHHH!!!
I went by car to Holmfirth and then with "my" (thousand thanks to Bernard!!!) bike at first the Holm Moss. Still in Holmfirth i asked another rider the way to Holm Moss (even though I had a good plan) but still, and he told me a wrong way!!! I turned in Holmfirth right to a road what is going up and climbed almost 200m, when I asked another rider, who told me that I have go down again to Holmfirth and then the road right (that was what I thought). OK, 30min gone and a climb behind I took the Holm Moss. The weather turned very foggy and wet, and as I get higher the fog became more thick so that I couldn´t see anything. The pass was harder than I thought, allways betwen 10-13%. On the Top I took some pictures and then down. Then to Glossop where it was still foggy and rainy and then the Snake Pass. That was easier than I thought, never more than 8%. I couldn´t see anything, but after the summit (no sign, nothing...) the landscape became really nice. Less clouds and down at the reservoir the sun was again visible.
About 3km after the Reservoir I turned left to a little road, and that was really hard. In the beginning still moderate, but to the end there were very steep up and downs. VERY STEEP, up to 25%. I was fighting with the climbs, but I could ride them all thanks again to Bernards triple;) I used the small gears very often... The weather was again very sunny with a blue sky. Very very beautiful!
At the same time there came hundreds of Road bikers so I asked and they had a charity ride of 100k.
I thought that I am almost back, but on the bigger road again, more climbing. The last downhill to Holmfirth was nice.
So I did 90km with 1860m of climbing. I never did so much meters on one ride in my whole life, but it feels good! Maybe I will do it once more until I am here... Wink
So that´s my resume of this day, full of new things and impressions.
And I had the Clifton CC windjacket on, what gave me perfect protection, especially riding downhill! I behaved very friendly, don´t worry! Wink
No shame to the Clifton CC!
Greetings from the flying Finn, Pavle.

Quick one from me - Sunday Clubrun today - about 90miles round a classic Osmotherley route. Lots of climbing, fantastic Autumnal weather, great company. 9 riders out which is a good size to keep together. Special mention in dispatches for Ginnie who did 80 miles yesterday with Bernard (and I suspect only really came out to talk about the Rugby....), IanK, who toughed it out after a few quiet weeks and Rob, just moved up from down south, who even found the view across the A19 to some pretty ordinary fields enchanting.

Good ride, thanks guys. Bedale/Thorpe Perrow next week, for some flatter roads and more Autumn colours.

Fully intended to go on Rob's Sunday run but after having my legs beaten to a pulp on the intermediate ride on Saturday wasn't sure I wouldn't just slow everyone down! I now feel like a proper wimp knowing Ginnie did both days!

Saturday's ride was good- 85 sunny miles out to Pateley and back- 8 of us out and a pretty brisk pace for most of the ride- it certainly felt 'brisk' on one or two of the climbs!!!

One notable incident with an a****ole in a 4x4 who decided to overtake the car which had slowed behind us to let us turn right off the A59 and then planted himself right into the middle of the bunch- fortunately without colliding with any of us (more by luck than judgment).

Ended up riding on my own to Thirsk to visit my parents today- 50 miles with just my Ipod for company- good job we share my taste in music!

That's a good ride you did, Pavle. In fact, it's quite similar to the 100km option on the Phil Liggett Challenge. Riding back from Ladybower Reservoir to Holmfirth, you'll have crossed Strines Moor which is certainly very lumpy. Holme Moss is one of my favourite climbs, too. If you go down to that area again, you should venture slightly further south and try Winnats Pass - be warned, it's steep!

Very enjoyable run to Osmotherly with Rob and co on Sunday. White Horse Bank drove out the morning chill followed by blue skies after lunch, punctuated by the sound of defenseless birds being shot by the gentry. I promised to post the link below for PaulM after our chat about cycling fashion amongst other things. Paul, I think Rules 16 and 17 were the main topics of conversation.

I turned up for the Kevin ride on Saturday. By 10:00 the glorious sunshine had brought out about thirty-odd riders, so some fast footwork was done to carve it all up into manageable groups. after a bit of shuffling round I joined the most sedate group available - an eighty-miler out to Beverley with Bernard at the helm, which in turn split again part-way round to send a splinter group onto a shorter route. Great countryside, nice company, and a slightly surreal lunch in a charity-run cafe, where we were fussed over by silver-haired ladies, one of who was grassed up by her colleagues as being "rather taken with the lycra". No toasted teacake, but good saute potatoes!

Thought the inbetweeners might be a little too fast for october, so I set off with the K group, this was also a little brisk, so when we caught Bernard etc at the end of stockton lane I decided a potter to Beverley would be just the ticket. Great lanes through the wolds with great company.

Clubrun next week, I've heard it's a flat one :D

Ride to Pateley bridge for me also which I can also testify was rather faster then normal for the inter ride which I think a few were feeling towards the end. However on the Plus side you do get home quicker  Good to see a large group at the square on a beautiful day. Door to door 117 miles for me at nearly 17mph av. :)

Found out today that they announce the Etape route tomorrow so was begining to think about next years event. Gave it a miss this years but the bug is still there :D Anyone else thinking about it?

Thank you G. for the idea, WOW, it looks really nice and impressive! I am speechless... Well, I have to think about it, but it is in my mind now. The only difference between my ride and the chalenge, is that I did 90kilometer, the other is 90miles!!! Nothing for me the Hill Elephant ;)
But you have also here around York nice routes...
And John G, how can you do such a distance in such a speed? Are you riding a E-bike? ;) That´s awesome and fantastic but too fast and too long for me...

Inspired by the article in Cycling Weekly, alluding to red being a winning colour, I turned up at the square on Saturday resplendent in my new Clifton gear. Despite Kevin's warning that "These guys won't be hanging around!", I opted for the ride to Driffield with Kevin, Neil and 4 York triathletes. Sure enough, the pace was faster than the 8 or so "K" rides I'd done previously and by mid-morning I was being dropped pretty regularly by the others. Quite an eye-opener for me to experience having to pedal continually simply to keep pace with the group and I failed pretty miserably on this occasion. Big thanks to the other guys for waiting for me on numerous occasions and especially to Kevin and Neil for the words of encouragement. All part of the learning curve, even for this late developer. We also experienced a piece of unprovoked road-rage with an oncoming car deliberately driving at us. Great day though and another 85 miles under the belt.

This is great stuff. I feel bit out of touch with what is going on club wise. So thanks Phil (and others) for posting snips like this which reflect how healthy things are.

In fact i know there is a lot more going on which never makes it into these roundup threads.

I have seen the Clifton in open hill climb and time trial results, cyclo cross and triathlon recently. With some great rides by our Juniours. I suspect there is a ton of good stuff going on with our Go Riders too?

Don't be shy. If you have some glory to bask in, and to me that includes just riding any of above, post it here. Plus it makes the job of our Press Officer a lot easier!

Hi Craig, where do you got the cycling weekly? I would like to read it also. For me the Clifton CC is a great Club with a lot of sources!
When I compare it to my club in Finnland, this here is much more organized with much more members! Nice to see sooo many people riding! And as Mark said, don´t be shy to write about everything here, it is nice to read about!
Go Clifton, GO!

Paul, I think Rules 16 and 17 were the main topics of conversation.

I think I came out of that quite well Richard - bar tape, saddle, socks, shorts, tyres - black, black, black, black & black! I also have shoes & helmet & cap to match club kit. And the green jersey I was wearing under me club top (because I think it is good to wear colour clashing non matching kit) I won in a stage race and held for a day and had to wear in 40 deg heat - so that is also ok! Full trade team kit is just wrong though imo unless you are mixing it with other trade team kit or club kit - just remember pros are paid to look like tw"$s!

Anyway Sunday club ride for me - a classic jaunt to Osmotherley on a perfect day which bore a canny resemblance to last weeks ride with a few more takers - just over 80 miles at just under 17 mph in good company. We caught & passed Mac heading into Huby on the way back, added a couple of miles on going round Sutton, Pottery Lane and into Strensall. I eventually swung off right into New Earswick and right again onto Willow Bank & immediately passed Mac again coming the opposite way presumably having come straight back through Haxby. Talk about the tortoise and the hares!

Driffield for me on Sat, superbly led by Kevin with Rich, Will, Fiona (the aforementioned York triathletes!) and Craig & Neil.

A great ride at a, er 'brisk' pace with a few cheeky hills that ruined my legs. Cafe in Driffield seemed a long way from home and the pace was just as fast on the way back (I blame Will) plus - the last section seemed to go on for ever. Glorious weather & good company though - super way to spend a saturday.

Well done to Fiona who switched groups at the last minute & to Craig for hanging in there and yes, some idiot actually drove AT us on purpose. Wish I'd got his number plate but I was too busy worrying about my escape route (ie the ditch)!

81 miles in total for me- had a horse to ride in the afternoon but legs weren't working, so must have been a tough one.

Apologies to Jess, Rich, Will and Fiona. When I re-read my post back the "York Triathletes" tag sounds very impersonal and a bit condescending. Wasn't meant that way, honest, I simply forgot to ask all the names at lunchtime and I didn't really get close enough to you guys in the afternoon.

no worries craig - it didn't read that way at all - besides, its hard to remember everyone's names when you are concentrating on keeping your lungs inside your ribcage! :-)
