Which Clifton road rides are for me?

Post by TomW »

Hi all, I've just joined the forum and am interested in joining the club. I'd like to know which rides are for me though before I tag along and join. I started riding nearly 2 years ago but want to start taking it seriously having moved to this area. At the moment I'm focusing on aerobic base miles until November keeping a steady HR at 65-85% max at various distances upto 80 miles. My anaerobic condition isn't great, I know it's important to start from the bottom up at this time of year and for a 'fresh starter'. So, which training ride would suit me? What times are they and where?

Cheers for any responses and I hope to see you on the road soon.

I'm no expert.

But judging from the HR percentages you'd want to be on the training ride 9am from the square, the group rides at 10am you'd be way underneath apart from short periods on the front and hills.

I don't know about others but on the training rides I'm pushing between 175 and 190 on the front, on the back my heart rate can be anything from 120-160 but it depends who is on it so maybe similar percentages to you.

Hi Tom, welcome to the club!

If you're focused mainly on base riding until November I'd suggest going out on the 10am saturday social rides for now because they give you the chance to meet club members and to perfect the art of riding in a group. Obviously, they'll also give you a wide range of aerobic and anaerobic miles depending on how hard you want to push on climbs (on big climbs the groups usually regroup at the top) or how many turns you want to take on the front. The great thing about these rides as well is that they go at the speed of the slowest rider, so no-one gets left behind.

However, if you want to build up your fitness and speed for November then maybe join the saturday training rides. The competitive season usually ends by November though, as far as I know, so I'd recommend joining them in the new year. If you want a go on the training ride though before the new year then by all means turn up and have a go. Just make sure you know the routes because if you get dropped then it's not as likely someone will wait and shepherd you home.

Social rides set off from Exhibition Square (in front of the art gallery) at 10am on Saturdays and the training rides set off from the same place at 9am on a Saturday morning.

I think that just about covers it, but I'm sure someone else will reply and put my wrongs right :)

Cheers,
Andy

Thanks Andy and Will for the advice, sound all round. I think I'lll try the 10 AM Saturday ride and see how that goes, in a group I usually pull along well so I'll hopefully have a good ride and meet some of you guys.

Just to back up what Andy said - do the social rides for base miles and focus on ramping up your fitness for next season. We'll do a pub night sometime at season end (ie later this month) to see what everyone's aims are for next year and hence what winter rides to put on.
