St Thomas' Day Massacre

Post by Rob »

Following tentative negotiations on the clubrun yesterday thought I'd post an early warning (so you can work on your excuses). For those new to Clifton the background is that, since the mid 90s, we've been running a Winter Solstice Sunday Clubrun to Tan Hill. This involves 140+ miles on the shortest Sunday of the year. The first hour and the last 3 hours are ridden off in the dark.

We've always used a 2-cafe strategy and, to be honest, have generally been blessed with good conditions (often better than the August version). That said, last winter was the first time we've had to call it off due to the weather. And then there was the year that the head-wind in Wensleydale made grown men cry......

The big learning point from last year was that once you've cancelled on 21st Dec, there's little likelihood of rescheduling. So Muzzy's suggestion is that we keep a close look at the long range forecast in December and if conditions are good take any opportunity the week before.

Anyway, that's all still a way off yet. There's already several of you expressed some deluded enthusiasm to tackle this again this year. My plan would be to split the Sunday ride and put a longer route in for 3-5 weeks leading up to the big day. By "longer" though I'm only talking of 100-110 miles....
